STAIRWAYS TO HEAVEN

'Stairways to Heaven' is THE best book i have ever read with 'Angels in My Hair' coming a close second! I would recommend for anyone to read Lorna's books. What a remarkable lady she is, i would love to meet her.

This book deals with so many controversial issues in todays soceity, homosexuality, reincarnation, abortion, natural disasters to name but a few!

This book was enthralling from start to finish. Please read it, it may well change your life!!!

Simple and plainly Beautiful!

What is particularly refreshing about this book, as well as Lorna's first book (Angels in my Hair) is that there is no set of rigid beliefs that the reader must subscribe to. There is no belief system, or set of ideas required. This is really freeing and liberating, as you can take each chapter and facet of Lorna's story and really enjoy it. I love reading Lorna's story, and I felt that each time I got a chance to read this book; I was giving myself a little gift. I loved hearing about how the Angels communicate to Lorna, and how they work out challenges and issues in a spriritual dimension. Lorna has access to that dimension, and it is fascinating to read about her part in it. Thank you Lorna, I loved reading about the Angels! The book represents to me, a valuable and a very beautiful paradigm that perhaps we can begin to grow towards together as a people who can be united despite thier differences. Thanks to Lorna and the Angels!

This is a wonderful book to be enjoyed by every member of your family! If one wasn't sure Angels were real, you will certainly be surprised that they are constantly watching over you and actually begging for you to begin talking to them. Do it because it works!! I loved the book

Fractions and "Real Life"

This is a wonderful book for use with first or second graders. It covers 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 in an engaging way that demonstrates realistic everyday uses for fractions that young children can relate to. Animals devide into two groups for a tug of war, three groups for a swimming race and four groups for a canoe race. A great introduction to fractions!

These books are great for my special education students. They may be 6-8 grade, but there math and reading skills are way below grade level. These books manage to introduce and reinforce grade level concepts at a level and pace all of my students can understand, and enjoy.

Good, for the dedicated reader

Starting with genes, proteins, or other biological traits, phylogenetics is about describing relationships between them. Phylogenetics tries to estimate "family trees" given only the family members visible today - exact lineage is guesswork, since the parents, grandparents, and shared heritage can never be known.
This book offers deep analysis of one family of techniques for deducing possible trees. It gives a very thorough, formal description of ways to examine and resolve different sources of information, or to determine that they can not be resolved. It offers minute analysis of ways to take subsets of the whole family, analyze the subsets, then merge the subset conclusions together, as much as possible. It also addresses the statistical character of the tree-building problem. The reader who masters this material has a powerful set of tools for phylogenetic analysis.
That reader must be truly dedicated, though. The first two chapters read like mathematical graph theory (because they are). The next few chapters are also highly mathematical, but offer a bit more biological insight. I'm not a mathematician, so I find this book tough going. The graph-theoretic conclusions give wonderful insight into combining information from multiple traits and in noting points of conflict. It takes me a while, though, to unwind the formal notation enough to attach biological meaning to it. There are a few helpful statistical analyses, but they could be missed - the more familiar kinds of statistics are hidden among the combinatorics and tree perturbations. Later chapters revisit familiar topics like parsimony and Markov models, but with theoretical depth that's hard to find elsewhere.
Within the whole gamut of phylogenetic techniques now used, this book addresses only one range. Within that range, however, Semple and Steel have done a fine job of showing the theory behind those techniques. I value the insights that this book brings. Even so, it's not always easy to dislodge those insights from the solid slabs of proofs in which they are embedded. I appreciate the demonstration of NP-completeness of specific problems, but I can't always apply that knowledge to the biology I want to address.
Anyone devoted to mastering every nuance of phylogenetic analysis should read this book. It goes beyond the needs of most application developers, though. It probably won't say much at all to those who just use the results of analysis; it simply does not address any particular application that an analyst might use. If you have the determination to understand and the patience to pick out the understanding, you'll find a lot to like in "Phylogenetics".

I agree with a lot of what the review by wiredweird said in "Good, for the dedicated reader". I just wanted to add that I believe that this book would be totally unreadable to all biologists that do not also have a fairly strong math or computer science background. As a computer scientist though, I found that this book was very useful because the explanations presented went beyond the frequently used buzzwords and included math/graph explanations of the techniques. While there is no code to copy from the book, I found most explanations sufficient enough that I could implement many of the techniques on my own if I wanted to.

An excellent guide for improving communication with others

I read the original THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES by Dr. Gary Chapman when I was a single freshman in college. I don't remember what inspired me to pick up the book, given that the tagline was "How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate," but I couldn't put it down. I read it in one all-night sitting, crying my way through the sections that illuminated and explained tension I'd had in specific relationships with family and friends. It was dark outside but light bulbs were going off inside my head all night.

"Aha! His primary love language is Acts of Service! No wonder he gets so frustrated when we kids don't help around the house."

"Quality time! That's what she values, not my professions of appreciation and friendship."

Based on its applicability to my own life, I immediately determined that Chapman's ideas about there being five love languages were spot-on. And so did about a zillion other people since he has sold approximately that number of books. If you're one of the few people who has no clue what I'm talking about when I say the five love languages, let me explain.

In Chapman's theory, there are five ways in which people express and understand love. These five "languages" are Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. Chapman believes that while some people can often express and understand love in any number of these languages, we all have a primary love language through which we are most comfortable expressing and receiving love. He goes on to say that tension in relationships often stems from not understanding the other person's primary love language --- not understanding how the other person is communicating their love and how that person needs to be communicated to in order to understand they are loved.

Though Chapman originally framed his teaching on the love languages in the context of marriage, it quickly became clear that people in all stages of life were connecting with the concept of the languages. And over the last several years, he has tailored his message for different groups in books including THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF CHILDREN, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF TEENAGERS, THE LOVE LANGUAGES OF GOD, and now, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES.

The United States has more singles that any other nation in the world except for India and China. Four out of every ten Americans are single, so it makes sense that Chapman would choose to address this large audience. In THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES the core teaching of the original book stays intact but he shapes his message for singles of all stripes --- never married, divorced, widowed, separated, and single parents --- by including anecdotes of the unmarried dealing with various relationship issues.

My one complaint about this book is that the bulk of the anecdotes still seem to revolve around romantic relationships and the looming specter of marriage. A couple of chapters are dedicated to the application of the love languages with roommates, co-workers, family members, etc., but in the chapters that deal with each of the love languages in detail, the illustrations revolve around dating relationships. That's not bad per se, but I would have liked to see more diversity in the types of relationships (i.e. best friends, classmates) that are addressed here.

Having said that, the five love languages themselves continue to ring true in my experience and their adaptation for the single audience is welcome. I highly recommend THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES to anyone who would like to improve communication with the people in his or her life. Chapman himself writes:

"My desire for the single who reads this book is that you will learn both to receive and find love in all five love languages. I am assuming that those who take time to read a book on love desire to become better persons, to have better relationships, and to reach their potential of leaving a positive impact on the world. It is my sincere belief that learning to speak and understand the five love languages will help you reach that objective."

you will have an unfair advantage

Readers of this book, you will have an unfair advantage.

But we all know what they say; all is fair in love and war.

If so, this book is a nuke with a big bang. I have read 3 of his books and this one drove the nail home.

At first it was hard to understand what makes me feel loved is not what makes others feel loved. I thought love was the same for everyone, boy was I wrong.

If you are looking to connect with someone new, this will definitely help you.

If you want to improve a situation at work, school, or at home, here is your answer.

If you want to understand your parents and some of the things they have said to you, again here is your answer.

I was surprised at my test results in the back of this book. When I looked at the results I found out why my mom and I were so far apart for so many years, and why she said some of the things she said that bugged me so much. Her love language was the lowest on my list.

Why my Dad had such a profound effect on me was that he spoke my love languages fluently.

What drove me into bad environments when I was troubled, why I drove around in my car going nowhere; it was because I was just trying to return to a place I felt loved. Knowing this has definitely saved me on gas.

I figured out why so many of my past relationships were so shallow and others were so wonderful and special.

The best thing of all is, I know what my love language is now and how to let others know what it is. This makes me happier in all of my relationships.

It is all about making life better, you can express to others what makes you feel better, help others in your life to figure out what their love language is, or figure out their love language on your own.

It takes so little effort to make someone feel good.

Not near the quality of the original

The original Five Love Languages was insightful, had a variety of examples and provided a good amount of psychological and Christian theory and application. This book is supposed to be for singles, but almost every example has to do with dating couples--people I don't really consider single. Rarely does it talk about regular friendship--and when it does, it's guy-girl friendships. I was hoping to get some insight into my same-sex friendships, family relationships and guy-girl non-romantic friendships, but this book falls horribly short of that. Get the original copy and just use a little imagination and brain-power to apply it to your single life. You'll save the time, money and frustration.

This youth edition of Against Medical Advice (2008) adds an introduction, photos, Q&As, and other educational back matter to the story of the medical tribulations of young Cory Friedman, son of co-author Friedman. The main text itself goes unaltered, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A first-person voice gets inside the head of Cory, who we met as a four-year-old recently prescribed Ritalin. It is the beginning of a grueling 13-year saga that is as much a struggle against Tourette’s as it is an endless war drug cocktails wage inside his body. His condition is alarming: OCD impulses create violent tics that sometimes knock him over or compel him to grab the steering wheels of moving cars. Soon the happy child becomes a slave to capricious masters by the names of Paxil, Risperdal, Klonopin, and more. Patterson’s infamously choppy chapters actually reinforce the twitching and lurching physicality of Cody’s existence, though the lack of dialogue and overall swiftness do prevent him from becoming a fully fleshed out. MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero

MED HEAD, James Patterson and Hal Friedman's young adult version of the #1 New York Times bestseller AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE, is about a boy's experiences growing up with the rare neurological disorder of Tourette's Syndrome with OCD. It's a private view of Cory Friedman's home and school life as told by Cory himself, from age five through his post-high school years.

Cory is five years old when his troubles begin. While playing a video game, he feels his first compulsion to jerk his neck. It is involuntary, caused by "miswiring of his brain," and is one of the many tics and physical and verbal compulsions his mind would present through the years. He calls these years "the battle against my mind," and his symptoms are embarrassing and physically debilitating at a young age. With his first trip to the doctor, Cory and his family start down a long road of suffering and worry that doesn't end until after his teenage years are over.

Through many years of treatment, Cory is put on handfuls of medications. The Friedmans meet numerous doctors, some of whom are helpful and others of whom are just insulting and harmful. His parents and sister, Jessie, try their best to support him through the physical and emotional stress, knowing there's only more of it to come. Love and family support are often not enough for Cory to feel happy, and he has to do without close friendships or outside understanding for years. All he wants is for the people around him to "get him," and one of the most difficult aspects of the situation is the Friedmans' realization of Cory's daily embarrassment and social isolation from having a disease that no one understands or empathizes with.

Because Cory's disorder is exacerbated by stress and anxiety, reactions he gets make things worse. Kids at school and teachers often treat him as if his disorder is contrived or controllable. He's frequently made fun of, and this makes his tics and compulsions more exaggerated. None of his treatments help much, and at some point, he begins thinking of himself as a "med head." He is on high-dose meds and often can't deal with the side effects, which range from intense agitation to more pronounced tics, to keeping him up at night and leaving him physically and emotionally exhausted. He gains weight and becomes clinically depressed on certain drugs. Yet somehow, with the support of his family, Cory gets through this. After years of hoping and wishing and wondering about a cure (or at least relief from symptoms), he discovers he's ready to call it quits with all drugs and experimental treatments.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, Cory finds that there's one thing he does feel better on: alcohol. He uses it to escape his unhappiness. At age 17, he has absolutely no idea what he's doing and no plans for the future, but his alcohol use is no joke. It goes way past common teenage partying to where he is passing out drunk at home --- a lot. Once his parents recognize the need to intervene, their next step is a risky one: they send him to a teenage wilderness camp in bitter-cold Wyoming, essentially forcing him to discover meaning in his life while surviving camping in ice and snow.

With great, personal storytelling by bestselling author James Patterson as well as writer Hal Friedman (the boy's father), readers are presented with an honest view of what it's like to grow up with a rare neurological disorder. The story is based on Cory's memories and put together through interviews. And Cory is a kid who will win you over from the minute the story begins. In the moment he calls his mom "his angel" with the claim that she saved him, he had my vote! The Friedmans are amazing, never faltering in their love and support even while it had to be killing them to watch him go through all this. Yet it is Cory himself who finds the will to get past the anger of living with a debilitating illness and then surpass everyone's expectations of him. It's through his hard work that opportunities arise, and his accomplishments end up going beyond those of many who have had smaller hurdles to overcome.

MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero.

One young man's struggle: I'm glad it turned out well for him

The true story of Cory Friedman's efforts to control his Tourette's and OCD, along with his violent temper and addiction issues (drinking and smoking). The book contains many brutal, pull-no-punches descriptions of his tics, his meltdowns, his anger and his frustration. His family stands valianty by him; his sister is seldom mentioned. After a wrenching 13-year battle (approx. ages 5-18) Cory's symptoms, which he previously was unable to control, start to fade almost naturally, through an "Outward Bound" type wilderness experience and time spent at a neurological clinic where the treatment encourages him to focus on his tics and anxieties, rather than try to suppress them. It also helps when he weans himself off most of the doctor-prescribed drugs he was taking. Though I wish this young man all the best, and the story is interesting as a peek into a world of pain and suffering, I don't feel there are any greater lessons to be drawn, or that Cory's experiences can be generalized in any way for the greater good of readers. Maybe they don't need to be and the point is that Cory told his story and I can now read it. Note: This book was released a year or so ago, titled Against Medical Advice. Med Head, with its eye-catching cover and an introduction by Ellen Hopkins, is the same book, aimed at young adults. If you are an older teen reader and you liked Med Head, you might have a look at both Beautiful Boy (by father David Sheff) and Tweak (by son Nic Sheff.)

Corey Friedman is an ordinary teenager with issues that take all his strength and courage to overcome. This is an account of his thirteen year journey dealing with OCD, anxiety, and Tourette's symptom.

Wow. Reading Corey's story amazes me. What he went through as a child with the daily ridicule of his peers and then the pure hell of a life time of different drugs, totally is awe inspiring. My own son deals with sensory issues and I've dealt with a school system that wasn't supportive. I can't even imagine what Corey's parents went through. What is really inspiring is Corey's voice. His descriptions of the meds that caused serious issues are so real. I felt for him when this one so-called expert in the field of Tourette's, ends up just viewing Corey as a test subject even when the one drug she prescribes to him causes him to want to end his life.

Corey also shows the reader what it's like to basically be a guinea pig to a wide assortment of meds. His OCD and Tourette's were very extreme. One way Corey dealt with the pain was self-medicating with alcohol. But this book doesn't just dwell on the negative. It shows Corey's successes and triumphs. My favorite part is when Corey shows this one school founder that he will make it out in the real world. And he does with determination and persistence.

The story is haunting and Corey's personal journey through years of medical turmoil will stay with you. At the conclusion are notes from Corey's parents, personal photos, and also info on OCD and Tourette's.
