This programmed book aims to teach students to design organic syntheses for themselves. Almost all available books on synthesis describe methods and syntheses already carried out by others. This book confronts the student with the problem of synthesizing molecules given nothing but their structure. The synthon approach is used: disconnections breaking the molecule into useable fragments (synthons) are introduced to the student who then teaches himself how to use them by solving a series of problems of steadily increasing difficulty. Though the book has the form of a programme it is not a conventional programmed text. There are no multiple choice questions. Instead, the student has a planned sequence of problems designed to demonstrate the use of each new concept and to test his understanding of it. Each problem is followed by possible solutions and full explanations, so that if the student fails to solve a problem he will still understand the answer better for having attempted the problem himself. The student therefore has the possibility of continuous self-assessment through the use of a large number of problems.

About the Author
Stuart Warren completed his PhD at Cambridge in 1963 after which he spent a year as Research Fellow at Harvard with Professor Westheimer. He has been a Lecturer at Cambridge since 1970. His research interests lie in organophosphorus chemistry and the mechanism of rearrangement reactions.

Assumes you're already an expert

The author coaches the reader through retrosynthetic analysis. He does a good job of explaining why specific bonds are chosen to be broken, giving a solid overall strategy to designing a synthesis. What he assumes is that the reader is an expert in chemical transformations. In other words, if you wanted to create an amino-substituted aromatic, he assumes you know that you could (as well as knowing how to) attach a nitro group and then reduce it. The author makes no attempt, either as a review chapter or appendix, to bring the reader up to speed on such matters. I suspect the book was created as part of the author's teaching duties and that his students were provided information separately that would fill in the gaps.
Looking through my organic chemistry text, Organic Chemistry by P. Y. Bruice, the retrosynthetic approaches are in there with information on how to effect the transformations. I should have saved the money and just reviewed the Bruice text.

Most engaging book on the logic of synthesis I have read.

Back in the early '80s, I struggled with synthetic problems in sophomore organic. All my teachers told the classes to try retrosynthesis, but they were not able to communicate just how, in practice, this should work. After reading just 2 or 3 chapters (and they are short--I read them over dinner one evening), I thought I would go crazy with excitement. Things suddenly made so much sense. I think I lost a lot of sleep during the next few days as I devoured the little book. Few other chemistry books--if any--ever have engaged me so. In a class of its own.

Good Non-Technical Introduction to Development Economics

This textbook was written for the purpose of introducing students without a background in economics to the basics of development economics, an endlessly complex subject. Secondi does a great job introducing topics and selecting articles comprehensible by students without a technical background. There is definitely a focus on more recent and modern themes in development economics rather than more traditional approaches and the book addresses recent events in the world of development economics.

Overall, a very nice introduction to development economics for undergraduate students with little to no experience in economics.

Find a style and stick to it

Any style guide’s purpose is to make writing understandable—with the possible exception of academic writing. Style Guide by The Economist offers sound advice for business writers, particularly for people writing articles.

Catch the attention of the reader and then get straight into the article. Do not spend several sentences clearing your throat.
Readers are interested in what you have to say. The way you say it will cause them to read on or give up.
Introduce facts as you tell the story.
Don’t tell readers what they should think, persuade them.

American business writers can learn much from this short book—despite its emphasis on British English.

This book is organized alphabetically. Listed under “P” we find the word propaganda, often mistakenly used as a synonym for lies. The accurate meaning is a “systematic effort to spread doctrine or opinions.”

This guide is full of opinions, mostly sensible, such as this one: Do not imagine that you can disguise the absence of thought with long words, stale metaphors, or the empty jargon of academics. Clarity matters. Articles have their foundation in ideas, analysis, and argument.

Style Guide wags its finger at times, even if what it says is good practice. Avoid using ought and should, it says. Don’t be chatty, over-familiar, or stuffy. While The Economist is a model of clear business writing, it can be stiff-upper-lippish. Annoyingly, it refuses to employ American usage in US editions of its what-they-insist-on-calling a newspaper. You and I would call this print publication a weekly magazine.

This reference book will give writers confidence and accuracy in their use of language. The Economist has global reach, and its guide is especially useful for anyone writing for an international business audience. Style Guide seeks to avoid confusion by addressing differences between British and American usage. Public school in the United States is free, run by the state and local districts. In the UK a public school is a private fee-paying institution.

Clarity of writing usually follows clarity of thought, says the Guide. This sounds a lot like plan and execute. But creativity is a non-linear process. Thinking and writing are intertwined and subject to constant revision. As one wit put it, declare an ending because revision can go on forever. All creativity comes about through engagement with a medium; paper, pen, back of a napkin, etc. Clarity of thought comes from writing.

"“A scrupulous writer”, observed Orwell, “in every sentence that he writes will ask himself at least four questions, thus: What am I trying to say? What words will express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?” Scrupulous writers will also notice that their copy is edited only lightly and is likely to be used. It may even be read.""

Great book just like the episode

Great book just like the episode. My kid LOVES Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and books so it was perfect for him. The book is a little long for my 2 year old so I mostly read the dialogue and skip over some of the description, especially at bed time. Definitely a must for any Clubhouse fan.

Read this visiting my grandkids

My grandkids saw this episode many times but we also enjoyed the story ebook on my kindle before tucking them into their bed. My 6 year old grand daughter said she liked the part of them working as a team and my 3 year old grandson liked the part of them all saving the day together. My favorite part was being able to read this cute & colorful ebook to them while visiting over the Christmas holiday.

It's the INNER game that counts!

There are many books that purport to show you how to enhance your leadership skills. Many - if not most - of them deal with actions that you should take. So, for example, you are advised to spend one-on-one time with your subordinates and 'get to know them better.'

Cavanaugh's book also has many helpful tips on actions you can - and should - take. But she goes one better by also addressing WHO you are being as you take those steps.

The central thesis of the book is that you are contagious. Yes, you. And contagious in the same way as you are when you pass on a cold that you have.

You affect people by what you do. You also affect them by how you show up. By the energy of your presence. By the tone of your voice. By the enthusiasm in your eyes. By the focus of your attention. By the sincerity of your words.

Most of us do not realize that is the sum total of all of these factors that determine how we are perceived. We also think that we can 'project' the persona which we wish to demonstrate. Thus. we can appear 'confident' by asserting that things are fine and we will meet our goals.

Nothing could be further than the truth. You can check this for yourself. How many CEOs do you know - or know of - who drain their people in meetings and who are themselves so hyperactive, driven and high-strung that they set everyone on edge?

Cavanaugh has come up with what she calls IEP for Intentional Energetic Presence. This means that you carefully consider and craft your Intention - what is it you wish to achieve and why. Then you marshal the energy you wish to bring into the room. And finally you incorporate that into the presence that you project.

it is simple. It is also powerful. You KNOW this at some level. The problem is that you don't DO anything about it. And part of the reason you don't is that no one has shown you how to.

Cavanaugh's book fills that gap. It neatly plugs that hole.

Some of it is awareness. She advises - page 86 - to notice how you feel, what your energy is, before you walk into a room. Decide if this is what you would like it to be. Pause, breathe and envision what you would like your energy to be. Step into it, become it and then enter the room.

Much of it is practical and an enhancement of what your are probably doing anyway. Multiple enhancements can turbocharge your efforts and bring great, even miraculous, success. For example, make your intention about something that is bigger than yourself. Thus if you want to become a great leader, it's all about you. But if you want to become a better leader so that your team members can be the best that they can be and therefore your company can bring convenience and joy into the lives of thousands of customers and make the world a better place, then your intention is about a bigger cause and has lots more energy.

The trick is to be sincere and authentic about it and Cavanaugh has a series of exercises that help you do this authentically.

Cavanaugh talks about the four quadrants that you function in - physical environment, mental and emotional state, vibrational energy and relational dynamics. In each of these areas she explains why it is important and how you can arrange your life so you gain the maximum advantage. For example, for the physical - which includes your body - she advocates adequate sleep. This is broken down into the intention to go to bed at a specific time, in a bed that is comfortable and sheets that are clean and cozy. It also includes turning off electronics at least an hour before you turn in. For vibrational energy she introduces you to a visioning exercise termed Energetic Xylophone that assumes you have different energetic and emotional states ranging form a zero to a ten. Cavanaugh shows you how to consciously tap into emotions - joy, love gratitude - that raise your vibration. You will not leapfrog from a zero to a ten, but you will move up several notches and this will both be noted and make you more effective.

Cavanaugh also talks about emotions and behaviors that drain you - such as jealousy and being busy-busy - and what you can do about them.

There are good exercises/tips at the end of every chapter. Pages 230-234 have a really useful table of stuff that happens in companies - including yours! - that is exhausting and what you can do to make it energizing.

The book is easy to read and the benefits will be great - but only if you implement the ideas Cavanaugh presents.

Cavanaugh’s writing style is easy, inviting and engaging

I firmly believe there are no coincidences in life. So when this book popped into my consciousness, I took the right action, picked it up and read it cover to cover. Cavanaugh’s writing style is easy, inviting and engaging. The idea that I can be the change I want to see in others is not a new one. But the manner in which she delivers the message and packages how exactly to be that change is refreshing.

Every day when I walk out my door I actively work to “set my intention.” This book has provided me more tools in my toolbox to help carry myself in a professional, positive way. If I want others to be engaged, I need to lead by example. Pretty simple stuff yet often hard to recall as I go about my days and interact with colleagues, family and friends.

It doesn’t matter if you lead a large group or you manage projects – this book has something for everyone. I loved it so much and was inspired to a degree I’ve not felt in a long while. Taking the message to heart – be contagious with the culture you want to live in – I outfitted my business unit with copies of this book. It’s that good. I was inspired to share the author’s message to as many as I can.

This is one of those books that will be dog-eared and marked up with multiple readings over time. It’s a valuable and timeless message that hits home for wherever you are personally or professionally. Well done Anese Cavanaugh.

Your 'presence' as a leader matters more than you know - and you can do something about it! This book will teach you how.

Contagious Culture is a great read for any leader who wants to increase their team's level of creativity and energy. If you've struggled to understand why the same words and tactics have an entirely different impact from one day to the next, this book will help you see the difference that 'how you show up' can make, and teach you how to consistently create the kind of experience that leaves team members, partners and clients energized and inspired.

Anese's IEP (Intentional Energetic Presence) methodology has been a secret weapon for leaders at some of the most innovative, creative organizations in the world, including IDEO, Zingermans and Cooper. I've had the privilege to attend one of Anese's workshops and seen firsthand how effective and pragmatic her work is - it made an immediate difference in my effectiveness as a CEO. Moreover, Anese is one of those rare human beings that truly walks her talk - she shows up with a grace, generosity and confidence that immediately transforms the environment she's in. Now, we can all learn to do the same by understanding the exact method she uses and has taught to many of the most innovative leaders in the world.
