Wonderful Story, Realistic in Many Ways

Cheryl Reavis does a great job with THE BRIDE FAIR, a story that could have been mediocre if written by another author. The romance takes place two years after the Civil War ended when everyone was trying to pick up the pieces to their lives and move on. Bitterness is fresh with the people that are native to the South.

Colonel Max Woodard fought with the North but was a prisoner of war for some time. When approached to govern land in North Carolina, he promised to deal with everyone fairly. He had just started his job when he first meets Maria Markham, a woman who lost her fiancee and two brothers when they were soldiers in the war. Now, Max is suppose to occupy Maria and her father's home.

Ms. Reavis could have written Maria's character as a shrew and Max as an angry man. Instead, she takes two vulnerable people, both sad and tired in their own ways and has them ever-so-slowly reach out for the other. Neither is perfect and their vulnerabilities show. The author takes a terrible time in the history of the United States and shows us that there are good and bad people on both sides. I would guess that if something like this did really happen close to 150 years ago, Max and Maria's love story would reflect closest to the real thing.

THE BRIDE FAIR won the 2003 RITA award for 'Best Short Historical'. If you want a nice read, a book that will engross you for an afternoon, then this special couple's story should entrance you. Try it. This is another Harlequin that is a keeper.

About the Author

Kyle Loudon is a software engineer at Matrix Semiconductor in Santa Clara, California, where he works with file systems and applications for memory chips. Prior to Matrix, Kyle developed platform software for embedded devices, including various wireless phones and the Apple iPod. He also led the graphical user interface group at Jeppesen Dataplan (now a part of Boeing), developed flight planning software, and created system software at IBM in the early 1990s. For the past several years, Kyle has taught object-oriented programming using C++ at the University of California, Santa Cruz Extension, and has worked with C++ since the beginning of its widespread use in 1990. Kyle is the author of Mastering Algorithms with C, also published by O'Reilly and Associates.

Please update for C++11

This pocket guide is decent for C++03, but it's 2012. I know C++ is huge, but the awesome new features of C++11 deserve to be documented. I'll buy the new pocket guide once an updated version comes out.

Good coverage of core language but not standard library

I used to know C++ very well but have done little C++ programming in the past decade. I was hoping this book would include all the niggling little details I had forgotten. Looking through the book jogged my memory to help me remember these details, but I was surprised to see how many were not explicitly stated in the book. Perhaps the best example of a detail not included is the difference between overloading the preincrement and postincrement operators. One of them takes an extra dummy parameter, but the book does not mention this difference. The book explains how to declare a multidimensional array when the dimensions are known at compile time, but does not give a code sample explaining how to do so when the dimensions are not known until run time. The section describing return codes from main does not explain that zero indicates success and a non-zero value indicates an error.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the book is how little is devoted to the standard library. No math functions are described. There is no discussion of how to format output. I was even hoping for discussion of the most basic uses of the STL. Instead, the book lists only the names of the header files and the four standard input and output streams with the most basic unformatted uses of these streams. The book covers the core C++ language fairly well, but almost none of the extensive standard library.

You get what you pay for

If you are looking for a quick and dirty C++ pocket reference, this book should be on the top of your list. It covers all of the necessities, which is great for when you are switching between programming languages. If you have too many languages in your mind, a quick reference is a great little refresher, which this book certainly provides.

My only qualm, and the reason it loses a star, is that the organization is not completely intuitive. However, after a few uses, you get used to this and it becomes a non-issue. I suppose you would have this with any book.

Detailed and Concise!

This book is great! It has the most common orthopedic conditions that one will see in the clinic setting. Not only does it give a brief overview, but it discusses physical exam findings, differential diagnosis, non-operative and operative treatment. I think the thing that really sets this book apart it that it also concisely addresses patient education bullet points to hit, surgical positioning, and describes the surgical procedure(s) that would be performed if the condition is treated surgically. It basically comments on most things the patient will question during the appointment so you won't be left without an answer. There are great anatomical illustrations and tables. It also details how to do the most common procedures and injections with pictures as well as online videos. This book is a combination of Netter's Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy and Essential Orthopaedics. I am a preceptor for PA and medical students, and I recommend this as a practical orthopedic reference that the student will be able to use for the rest of their career. It could even fit into the pocket of a white coat!

There are a handful of minor errors I have found throughout the book (like using a 25g needle for an aspiration) but again, these are minor and you'll recognize these if you have a little bit of ortho knowledge. The biggest area for improvement I see would be with the ICD-9 codes that are listed for each condition. These are great but ICD-10 is coming in October and the ICD-9 codes won't be applicable at that point. This could certainly be updated in a second edition, but seeing how complicated orthopedic ICD-10 coding is going to be it might be an overwhelming section.

Overall, I am very impressed with the amount of practical and useful information that is contained in this small book. If you are going to get one orthopedic book, get this one!

Tarrick, Alien Lord saves his sassy woman Cat and made me like him even more... Swoon!

I had to laugh in the first chapter... The Latharians has just learned that the human women is absolutely nothing they thought the earth women would be. Stubborn, and much like the Warriors as well. A unheard of hunger strike? What I do like of these warriors is the fact that as soon as they heard about this they were concerned of these woman... Yes my heart melted....
I love Cat!! This is the day after the alien invasion or Tarrick invasion of her life. Tarrick her alien hunk fantasy come true, only she didn't like the that he thought he could be her 'master'. Cat has given in to her desire for Tarrick... Hot Alien Hunk in leather... Who wouldn't.
But we find her listening to the Warriors trying to figure out the Earth station's wiped data. All the while she is gathering information. She was no victim she was a survivor. On asking Cat to help them... She flipped them the bird... Making it clear that she refuses to help them. She is still mad because the women were held hostage.
As human Cat doesn't understand the logic of the Latharian race, they see the earth women as just a treasure to be claimed, no harm should come over them but they also thought that these women had no intelligence, couldn't to any 'warrior' tasks. Did they get a quick education..
What I like was that amidst all this Mina Carter made Cat feel like a fairytale princess in the Latharian dresswear that is long and 'bunches around her ankles' making her want to twirl around.
Well as much as we 'dislike' the Latharians...T'Laat's are worse. They don't ask they they take. They lie, they force and think nothing of shooting women... And we thought Tarrick and his Warriors were messed up!! These aliens wanted these women, and they were not taking no for an answer....
Tarrick's ship was infiltrated with the aim of grabbing the women!! The T'Laat's found out that these women are so not what they thought, and this is how Tarrick found these military trained women, holding their own against the enemy. Respect earned in this new found knowledge the Latharians free their women.
Lots of action and yes some hotness. The point is, as in reality Mina points out that as much as there are bad out there, you can face even worse. In this adventure we found that Cat Moore was a survivor and was not defeated even in their situation. And liked it as much, she was attracted to her Alien Lord. There are also very interesting things happening ...do all that, you are going to have to read this book! Now Mina Carter, who will be next and HOW SOON!

Loving this series!

I had never been a big fan of reading the sci-fi genre but Mina Carter is definitely changing my mind on that. I am really loving this series. This one was full of action and heat!
I love Cat's feistiness and Tarrick's possessiveness. They make for one explosive couple. I also really enjoyed meeting some of the other females. I can't wait to get their stories. I know they'll be just as much fun and make life difficult for the men they end up with!

Great story, great continuation from Captured by the Alien Lord.

I loved this story. It is a continuation from Captured by the Alien Lord. That one was a romantic version of a space opera, this one turns it on its head. OMG, the Lathar are surprised at Earth women.
So, the setup -- in the earlier book, a few ships from an alien warrior race capture the military spacestation where our heroine lives and works. Even though the humans put up a good resistance, the alien technology is too much and they capture everyone. They want the woman for sex and breeding, because they don't have female offspring. Dang them for also being really hot, buff and all alpha, too. The leader of the warrior group had her our heroine's voice in communication transmissions, and wanted her sight-unseen. When he sees her, he is immediately attracted. He blackmails her with promises of the other women's safety, and they have sexy times that even she things is wonderful, because he is hot, hot, hot, and really good in bed. She never forgets her first allegiance to her own people, though.
Okay, start of this story, some less-nice war ships of his race come and attack to get the women they have captured. They have more ships and robots than the first captors, and manage to take the women to their ship. In his arrogance, the new leader decides to take our heroine--mostly because she belongs (in his mind) to the hero.
Our human women really surprise everyone and are a big part of rescuing themselves, but, as you can tell from the title, our heroic alien lord rescues our heroine and the other women. These women are all kick-azz warriors and can strategize, fight, and realize the first group was much better than the second group.
Cat renegotiates with the alien lord for the women's happiness, as well as their safety.
I loved this story, I loved the twist of how the aliens now see humans, and especially human women, as strong warriors, too.
The final twist I won't tell you.

I agree this book is amazing.

In a poetic, yet detatched way, Maya Angelou captures the heart of her struggles growing up female and Black during the Depression. Her style and description draw in the reader and keep her spellbound even during the most painful scenes. You feel deeply for the author and her little brother as they drift through their lives living for a bit of affection. Neglected by their divorced parents, Maya and her brother get sent to Arkansas at ages 4 and 5 to live with their grandma and handicapped uncle. Although life is hard and love not demonstrated, Maya learns much from her grandma and uncle.
The theme of this book is the quest for the child to be loved by the adult. Maya feels inferior. She feels ugly and compares herself to her magical brother Bailey. Both children are starved for true affection and daydream a white movie actress on the screen is their long lost mother.
Maya and her brother are eventually united with "Mother Dear" in St.Louis when she is eight. Unfortunately Mother's boyfriend begins to abuse Maya(...). This is graphically portrayed in the book. Maya's feelings of not belonging and not being truly loved are compounded after the abuse.
I admire all the autobiographical books by Ms.Angelou. She has achieved a lot in her life for a person who started out in such a sad situation.
This book should be read and re-read.

The early years of Maya Angelou

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou, is the first volume in this author's extraordinary series of autobiographical narratives. "I Know..." begins with her childhood and takes us into her young womanhood. This book has, since its publication, become a beloved contemporary classic of African-American literature.
After their parents' separation, young Marguerite (her given name) and her brother, Bailey, are sent to live with their strong-willed grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas, deep in the segregated South. Angelou also describes her time spent with her other grandmother in St. Louis, as well as her young adulthood in San Francisco. The overall time period of the book overlaps that of World War II.
"I Know..." offers important insights into the world of racial segregation, and painfully records the toll taken by racism in its various forms. Also powerful and important is Angelou's recollection of surviving a brutal sexual assault when she was a child. Angelou recalls vividly the authors who made an impact on her during her childhood and young adulthood: James Weldon Johnson, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, and others. The book concludes with her sexual awakening as a young woman.
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is an American classic which has lost none of its power in the 30 years since it first appeared. Angelou's prose is direct and personal, and marked with passages of wit and beauty. For scholars of African-American literature, women's studies, or literary autobiography, this is an essential volume.

Great Insights

Maya Angelou is a great writer who took me to her world with this book. In so doing, I learned more about her and particularly her race and culture than perhaps I've ever learned in one place before. The book ends up not just being about the enlightenment of a writer, but enlightening to the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The many worlds of the Tlingit in Alaska today

The author does an excellent job presenting how Tlingit are attempting to celebrate, embrace and reestablish their cultural ways in this honor book for the 2000 Carter G. Woodson Elementary Division Award, National Council for Social Studies. The author describes how the Russians and then the United States attempted to erradicate the culture of the established Tlingit and how children are encouraged to go to week-long camps to learn about Tlingit art, storytelling, language, and customs. It would be important for children to understand why an author would write "some Tlingit must have a hard time looking at the American flag." Discussion will abound in relation to this book. Photos are interesting and provide helpful information. Maps are included. Good for classroom, school, and public libraries.

Children of the Tlinget

I feel this book is a very good representation of the Tlinget lifestyle. Both my daughters have gone to the Islands in Southeastern Alaska to teach Bible School to the Tlinget Children and do work projects. Both my daughters enjoyed learning about the Tlinget culture and this book will teach children who are unable to visit Southeast Alaska about this special culture. The pictures in this book from Kake were taken when my one daughter was there and she is the person doing the face painting on page 12. My daughter fell in love with the children of Kake who were starving for attention. I thought sure when she arrived home she would have Nicki in your suitcase. He is the little boy in the purple shirt on the cover of the book.

This volume offers an overview of current research on the moral brain, examining the topic from disciplinary perspectives that range from anthropology and neurophilosophy to justice and law. The contributors address the evolution of morality, considering precursors of human morality in other species as well as uniquely human adaptations. They examine motivations for morality, exploring the roles of passion, extreme sacrifice, and cooperation. They go on to consider the development of morality, from infancy to adolescence; findings on neurobiological mechanisms of moral cognition; psychopathic immorality; and the implications for justice and law of a more biological understanding of morality. He is the editor of Empathy: From Bench to Bedside and coeditor of The Social Neuroscience of Empathy, both published by the MIT Press.
