Alkoxysilane-based formulations have since become the material of choice for the consolidation of stone outdoors.l This volume, the first to cover comprehensively alkoxysilanes in stone consolidation, synthesizes the subject's vast and extensive literature, which ranges from production of alkoxysilanes in the nineteenth century to the extensive contributions from sol-gel science in the 1980s and 90s. Included are a historical overview, an annotated bibliography, and discussions of the following topics: the chemistry and physics of alkoxysilanes and their gels; the influence of stone type; commercial and noncommercial formulations; practice; lab and field evaluation of service life; and recent developments.
This book is designed for conservators, scientists, and preservation architects in the field of stone conservation and will also serve as an indispensable introduction to the subject for students of art conservation and historic preservation.

This book tells a compelling story of how a group of European Jews journeyed to Israel during World War II. Their journey, which was expected to last a few months, lasted more than four years, took them through a number of friendly and pro-Nazi countries, and involved a shipwreck.

A story of courage, leadership, perseverance, and strength of human spirit.

I hate this text book

Poorly written with little or no graphic/ visual information to help you. Text is repetitive, badly written and dry.

If it required for the class get it I guess but you certainly won't learn anything from it.

Needs the editors to go back through it

This book is a very audacious one in its scope as it attempts to provide the basis of positivist analysis for public policy. It briefly skims over the methods of quantitative analysis in order to give the reader an idea of the sort of 'toolkit' a public policy analyst would employ in their work; however, in trying to be so bold, it comes up short. The fast and heavy approach has left some areas of the book without a full explanation, and thus accompanying instruction will have to pick up the slack. On other areas outright errors are present, like a 2 year moving average that manages to start after only 2 quarters, an error in editing that should state the moving average is a 2 quarter period lag instead of years, and other calculations in the book create errors that do not match the presented output. While this will not create a problem if the book is used in a course whereby the instruction accounts for these errors, the errors will be problematic for the reader who is trying to use this book as a method of learning individually as they will be without methods and examples to understand what is being explained. Furthermore, in the presentation of data throughout the book the editors failed to include any indicators that the data would continue onto another page when such carryovers occurred, and thus if students were instructed to use the data provided in the text as an exercise then mistakes are very prone to happen.

Because of the attempt to teach so much in so few pages, and then making grave mistakes in those pages, I was forced to reduce this book's rating. Overall Gupta's efforts are genuine and the book does well to give a method of introducing these topics; however, the book could not be used in a vacuum of information. Hopefully the next edition has a more thorough editing.

Best historical novel I've read in 10 years

I've never been a fan of Follett, and picked this book up with some misgivings - anyone these days can try to do an "historical" novel with some quick sex, some fake archaic new-speak, and a TV-movie-miniseries concept of history. While there are some minor flaws in this book, its sweep, characterization, tensions, and love of its subject are simply riveting. I could not put the darned thing down and have lost sleep for a week compulsively page-turning. Follett, unbelievably, seems to have made little splash with this book when it first came out - more shame to the critics who missed a "Gone With the Wind" from a conventional thriller author.
His primary strength in the book is his magnificent characters. By the end, Prior Phillip, Aliena, Jack, Richard, "Witch" Ellen, William of Hamleigh, Waleran Bigod, and a host of supporting characters are as real as people you know. Their strengths and weaknesses feel as sound as earth. I've just reached the part where the Cathedral is finished, and its magnificent image, built in love, hardship, and devotion, colors the whole book like light through stained glass. And I suspect the ending will be as immensely "right" as the entire rest of the book in its proportion in spinning out complicated human lives and emotions.
Follett manages to write of an age of religious devotion without tumbling into the two pits - making fun of medieval Christian faith, or uncritically adopting it. An IMMENSELY satisfying read.
I could quibble with what I feel is some gratuitous sex, some slightly contrived plot twists, but that's like complaining about some flotsam in the river as you're going over Niagara.
DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK if you love wonderful story-spinning and history.

an excellent piece of historical fiction

I actually listened to this book on tape, while my wife read the paperback. Both of us loved it. I not only recommend the book, but also urge people to rent the Book on Tape version, narrated by David Case, whose acting and narrative talents shine through, bringing the various characters to life. (But still purchase the book from Amazon!) I came to Pillars of the Earth after spending about two solid years reading, in my spare time, nothing but medieval histories, with a focus on fourteenth century England and the Plantagenet kings. I had never before read a book by Follett, who I had assumed mass-produced pulp spy fiction. I only chose the book because of of my interest in medieval history. To my delight and surprise, I discovered the book to be a true work of literature, which might well still be read in 100 years. I found myself amazed by Follett's ability to create an extremely complex and compelling plot, with compelling characters, against a backdrop that seemed true to the histories I had been reading. The early twelfth century is a period neglected by us moderns; but it's one that's inherently interesting. Who, today, has even heard of King Stephen (who preceded the famous Henry II, immortalized twice by Peter O'Toole in the 1960s movies Beckett and Lion in Winter)? Because, in England at least, Stephen's reign was a time of virtual anarchy, Follett was able to use the period to create characters who demonstrate the brutal lengths to which people can go when unconstrained by law and an effective legal order. At the same time, though, he has created religious and other well-meaning characters who, if alien to us because of their belief in Hell and a God intervening almost minute-by-minute in human afairs, display courage and the best of intentions in the harsh face of barbarism. This juxtaposition of the brutal and the well-meaning makes for an interesting meditation on human nature and on the hope for the gradual further civilization of our species. His ultimate message is encouraging, though he certainly doesn't shrink from depicting the nastiness of which humans are capable. In short, the book is a marvelous piece of fiction, in which Follet has done an excellent job capturing the feeling of a distant and neglected period of history.

Not an Oprah follower, but I love this book

Personally, I don't place a lot of stock in Oprah's book club lottery. The instant stardom that placement on this reading list bestows authors isn't always, in my opinion, justified. That being said, this is a wonderful book.

Pillars is complex, moving and informative. The research was excellent, the characters are engaging and the story moves at a surprisingly quick pace for a novel of this length. The descriptions of the scenes, the completeness of the political interplay and the twists of the plot make this one of my favorite books of all time. Normally, I have little patience for historical fiction unless it brings something new or truly engaging to the table. Pillars certainly does that and more.

In other words, while there is no such thing as the perfect book, this one comes very close. My advice is simple...READ THIS BOOK -- YOU'LL LOVE IT!

But do yourself a small favor, go to the used bookstore or the library, this is not a new release and you can enjoy Follett's favorite work for a fraction of the cost. A quick search of Amazon shows dozens of options that don't have the Oprah name or any other bells and whistles that I'm sure are unneeded to enjoy this spectacular piece of fiction

The Rosy Cross in a Context of Conflict

Frances Yates is well-regarded for her superb study "Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition" (1964). This book (1972) is a sequel. It places the murky origins of Rosicrucianism in the context of the religious and political rivalries of the early 17th Century. It is an extremely engaging and fascinating study which, unfortunately, was not carried through to its logical end-point--it reads like a draft of a bigger and more definitive book. But a wonderful draft it is!
At this moment there is a danger that the collections of the Warburg Institute, which made all of Yates' work possible, may become unavailable to scholars or even dispersed. These collections are irreplaceable--they are the hard core of scholarship in 16th-17th century cultural evolution. If this book inspires you, please inform yourself and do whatever you can to help preserve this resource for posterity.

This is something extraordinary

Absolutely different and interesting research about the mystical side of early modern history, this kind of book is not written too many times. Most of these kind of books give just shattered "who is who"-collection, but this book investigate the development of magical beliefs, alchemy, science and the connection of these in rosicrusian view, ordinary sources are well attached to the big picture and anachronism is avoided, this is what I call the true historical research. Purely scientific approach to the field that is not considered very scientific. Quite expensive book, but quality costs!

In my opinion this easily ranks among the top books ever written on the Rosicrucian movement. Yates gives prolific detail regarding the earliest developments of this occult group (sometimes overwhelming if you are not already somewhat familiarized with the material). This is a must-read for any serious student of the topic and I highly suggest it to those with an interest in learning more about the order. However I do suggest a bit of research on the Rosicrucians and esotericism in general prior to diving into this one if you want to get the most out of it.

Magical

Sometimes I like to read a children's or young adults' book. It reminds me of the times when I trotted over to the local library without a worry on my mind, collecting a total of five books and being able to return them all read the following day. Vacation was a wonderful time for me. Nowadays, with all the busyness of work and everyday life filled with all kinds of responsibilities, it's a relief to be able to pick up some light reading and return to that time when you were young, small and still full of lively imagination.
The Secret Portal is one of those books that make you believe in magic again. The story is simple: several schoolboys discover a portal to another dimension. They make friends with the locals, are confronted with a nemesis and together try to vanquish the forces of evil.
Written in a very easy language, it's still intriguing enough to capture older readers. It's adventure in its purest form. Perspective jumps from the good guys to the bad guys, which might spoil the fun for experienced readers who like to discover the plot by means of little hints, but this technique elevates the humour, which is also waiting at every corner. Small and seemingly unimportant scenes turn out to be key events in the story.
Throughout the book, magic is the most important player. Not only the visible magic involving spells and potions, but also invisible magic. The way people cling to each other and do everything in their power to protect each other. It's a tale about friendship, working together, being unprejudiced against appearances and lineage. I certainly hope readers won't be prejudiced against the simple idea, because there is so much more behind this story worth discovering.

Have you ever wondered if other dimensions existed, where magical creatures such as vampires, angels, and trolls would roam their own world similar to ours? Jack and his three friends discover the truth about the universe, well at least part of it. Jack, the protagonist, arrives at Earls on a Saturday afternoon and discovers that his friend Simon, and himself would share a room much smaller than the rest of the first years. That may be so, but to Jack's surprise a secret portal opens up in the corner of their room one night and that's where their adventure begins!

The novel The Secret Portal was quite enjoyable to read. It would flow from one adventure to the next bringing original conflicts to the table. I enjoyed their time at Earls and how the author explained the typical on goings of a regular school environment, such as the bullying and the schoolwork they had to do. I could relate easily since I am a student myself. Some parts struck me as quite hilarious and I couldn't stop thinking about how funny yet dim-witted their conflicts turned out to be. The description is flawless and everything fits perfectly in your mind. It's almost as if you can see the book play out in your mind like a movie. Sadly the characters are somewhat dull apart from Simon, who whines a lot and Clarissa who always seems to have high spirits. I just couldn't bond as well with the characters as I usually do. The conclusion was a bit slow paced and I hated the fact that our main characters were somewhat powerless against magical creatures. I'd say this is a must get if you or your child likes fantasy. It's a great book for adults or teens too. If you've read fantasy novels when you were young, then let me tell you, you'll fall in love with this one! You can't go wrong with this book; at least I loved it from the start until the end!

Late to first year orientation, Jack Gray runs into Earls boarding school just in time to be assigned to the smallest room, a converted storage closet. He and his roommate, Simon Bentley, soon make friends with Dean Leonard, a boy with bottle-thick glasses and James Bond, not the spy, but a victim of parental humor. The four friends suffer the expected first year trials, bad food, boring teachers, and bullying second year students. During a restless, homesick night, Jack hears voices coming from behind Simon's dresser and discovers a portal to another dimension and another school, the Human Race Studies Academy, or HURASTAC.

Beings of all kinds, including Martians, ghosts, vampires and angels, study mankind at HURASTAC. Jack makes friends with students from the academy and with the help of a budding witch, the four Earls students explore HURASTAC's dimly lit halls. It's a wonderful adventure until a vampire slips though the portal into the human world. Unless the friends, both human and otherwise, act quickly, even the strongest magic won't be able to stop him.

THE SECRET PORTAL reminded me of the Harry Potter series. The setting bounces between the mundane world (Earls) and a magic world full of amazing people and creatures (HURASTAC). Though the events are fantastic, the relationships ring true. THE SECRET PORTAL confronts issues important to real children, making friends, resisting bullies, and circumventing authority. Finally, like Harry Potter's J.K. Rowling, the author, Reno Charlton, uses humor as well as imagination to captivate young readers.

I enjoyed the characters in THE SECRET PORTAL. The human students are realistic and sympathetic. I particularly liked Dean, the bullies' primary victim. The otherworldly students are a lot of fun. Jeebies, a wacky gnome, adding a great comic touch, while Gladstone Gore, is not only a vampire, but every kid's worst nightmare of a teacher.

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, "A World of Art: Works in Progress," aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including "A World of Art," "The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams," "The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970"; and an art history book for children, "Cave Paintings to Picasso."

This book helped increase my faith

If you want to understand who Jesus is and read about his life, this is the perfect book. I love the weaving of story with Bible passages. Mr. Swindoll puts you in the middle of an event in Jesus' ministry allowing you to be immersed in that moment. It's very eye opening. I would warn you about the chapters in part 3 that deal with Jesus torture and crucifixion. Experts testify to the process of crucifixion beyond any of my previous understanding. I had to read these parts in very small segments.

There is a wonderful prayer at the end of the book that I have written out and recited multiple times. I know as I continue studying Matthew, that this book will help me understand more of the gospel.

This book was amazing. I have read the bible many times, but missed so much. This book explains Jesus' life in historical context, which sheds SO much light on things I didn't understand. Like for example, the explanation of the trials that led to his crucifixion helped me understand better why Pilate allowed even though he found no guilt. So many more examples, but I'm on a tablet. BUY!!!

Fantastic

I read Esther written by Mr. Swindoll, and loved it, so I thought I would give this one a try. I was not disappointed​ with this one either. Mr. Swindoll is so knowledgeable​ about the people in the Bible, that he draws you in from the start and you are captivated with them until the very end of his books. I know much about Jesus, about His life. This book taught me some interesting facts I was not aware of. If you are considering getting this book, you should it won't disappoint. I am going to read David next by Mr. Swindoll, I know I will enjoy that one also.
