My lab book is missing pages!!!!!! I'm really glad I looked before my first lab period because now I have to buy a completely new one and get it delivered in time for me to complete the pre-lab homework.

Good...for a chemistry lab manual

The laboratory manual is what you would expect. The language can sometimes be confusing, making the procedures hard to follow, but the introduction to the lab is often very help and allows you recall formulas and knowledge from reading the chapters in your text book. A lot of the problems are better worded than in the previous 9th edition as well. This makes it easier to understand what the book is asking. However, sometimes some questions are just to vague and yahoo answers will be a great resource if you cannot find what exactly is being asked. Overall, a better chemistry manual than I have dealt with before, but still has its shortcomings. The reference appendix is by far the most helpful resource.

Too many ripped pages

Said it was in good condition but too many needed pages were ripped out....I regret buying it used now honestly. Like I understand if you have maybe 2 or 3 ripped pages but there's about at least 10 ripped pages that I need.

Essential.... really?

This book claims to be 'All the grammar really needed for speach and comprehension...', however, there is much more information needed than what is presented in this book.
"Essential Dutch Grammar" is a good primer and introduction to Dutch Grammar- as much as is possible in 100 pages. It includes information on Spelling, Word Order, Negation, Articles & Nouns, Adjectives, Adverbs, Possessives & Possession, Demonstrative adjectives & Pronounes, Pronouns, Verbs, Conjuctions, Prespositions, Telling Time, Idiomatic Constructions and an Appendix.
Each topic is presented first with an introduction, then with the applicable grammar rule followed by examples. This format is more user-friendly than other Dutch Grammar texts on the market.
I'd reccommend this book to beginning students and native speakers who want to brush up on their grammatical skills (for example, those speakers who have emigrated out of Holland/Belgium) - especially since the price is right.
If you'd like a more in-depth study of grammar, then look for "Dutch: A Comprehensive Grammar" by Bruce Donaldson, but also be willing to shell out quite a bit more money.

Great Introductory Grammar

This is the perfect grammar for anyone who is just starting to learn Dutch. It presents eveything you need to know clearly and concisely without going into unnecessary detail. And it's a bargain! Those who continue studying will eventually need something more detailed, but this is definitely the place to start. For advanced students I recommend the excellent Dutch: A Comprehensive Grammar by Bruce Donaldson (Routledge), but I found it to be too much information for beginners.

Okay, But Could Be Better - Comments by a Dutchman

Many mistakes and typos - the book is probably still 98 or 99% correct,
but proofreading by a native speaker of Dutch would have greatly improved it.
Maybe Dover could publish a corrected Kindle edition?

Just the most glaring examples:

p.60: Als het oven heet was zou het koek gebakken worden.
In the first place, it's DE oven and DE koek, but even then it's an
awkward sentence:
Als de oven heet was zou de koek gebakken worden.
It's much better in the perfect tense:
Als de oven heet geweest was zou de koek gebakken zijn.
I can't think of a good sentence in the pattern that the book prescribes.
Als het winter was zou je koud worden?

Other strange sentences:
p.27: De vrouw is zo oud als de man.
should be: De vrouw is net zo oud als de man.
p.30: Waarheen gaat hij?
should be: Waar gaat hij heen?
p.58: Als ik jij was ...
should be: Als ik jou was ...
p.62: Ik mag (mocht) koffie niet drinken.
should be: Ik mag (mocht) geen koffie drinken.

The jacket blurb promises 'no archaic material' but p.19 has
'been/beenderen' for 'bone/bones' - an good example of a very
irregular plural, but very few (if any) Dutchmen use the word 'been'
for 'bone' anymore (except in a few compound words that are almost never
used in the plural.) The common word for 'bone' is 'bot' - plural: 'botten.'
'Been' (plural 'benen') is the common word for 'leg.'

p.23: een beroemd kunstenaar, een verstandig leraar
p.26: een eenvoudiger oplossing, een gemakkelijker stoel
- poetic license allowing limited dropping the adjectives' E is
elevated to a grammar rule. There's nothing wrong with not dropping
that E:
een beroemde kunstenaar, een verstandige leraar
een eenvoudigere oplossing, een gemakkelijkere stoel.
Why bother beginning students with this? It only makes sense with
'groot' because that can mean both 'great' and 'big, large, tall' -
hence 'een groot man' (a great man) and 'een grote man' (a big man) -
but that's not the example given. And for women you can't leave out
those E's: 'Koningin Wilhelmina was een groot vrouw' is not correct Dutch.

The Dutch verb 'rijden' means both 'to ride' and 'to drive' - but that
second meaning is never mentioned. A serious omission.

p.22 de verste boter, het verste vlees
It looks awkward because Dutch 'verste' is the superlative degree of
'vers' (fresh) - but more commonly of 'ver' (far.) It would be better
to say 'de meest verse boter' or 'het meest verse vlees.' (Wat je ver
haalt is lekker?)

Specifically, why in the hell would God choose someone as slope-shouldered as Jared—someone so unreligious, so strange—to be a channel for His supernatural power? He doesn’t even read the Book of Mormon. Plus he smells funny. As their tracting grows fruitless and Jared’s messages grow more bizarre, Kenny begins to wonder: Is Jared really touched by God?

A fine first novel.

This book got off to a strong start, with good character development and a compelling premise. For the first half, I could hardly put it down as the story line propelled me along.

Where my interest began to slow was in the second half, where the story became fantastical to me. I think Draper's idea was to have the reader consider the absurdity of organized religion, its rituals and its beliefs about what constitutes a good life. I also think he was drawing a not-too-subtle alignment between dogmatic religious practice and mental health. If this was indeed Draper's goal in the story, he made his point, although somewhat awkwardly. Draper clearly did a lot of research on religion and mental health, and occasionally goes a little overboard to convince the reader that he knows his stuff.

The afterward and Draper's blog (johndraper.com/blog) give a wonderful insight into his thinking, his life and the inspirations that created this fine first novel. And reading both helped me truly understand the novel and the novelist.

"A Danger to God Himself" got me thinking, which is a good thing. I recommend this novel and look forward to more from Draper. I hope his next book comes soon!

I loved this book

I loved this book! The characters and narrator have unique, vivid voices that caught me up and made reading this book so very satisfying. I was immediately sucked into the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. You see Jared slowly succumb to his psychological demons. This causes Kenny to transform from a shallow, self-centered young man who has never examined his life and faith into a caring man who sees the world in his own way, contrary to how he was taught to simply accept unquestioningly. You see him find love and the value of emotional intimacy, something completely unknown to him in the past. He questions and challenges, while looking for a sign of God’s existence – and ultimately finding something more real and vital to his existence. Definitely recommend this book.

John Draper’s irreverent approach to spirituality is nothing less than downright refreshing. His unique debut maintains a nice balance between the holy and the profane from beginning to end. Offering his audience an intriguing and provocative read, A Danger to God Himself is perfect for those who appreciate reading about hypocrisy in organized religion while at the same time are doing a bit of soul searching. Comes highly recommended!!

Dr. Helen Roseveare went to the Congo in 1953. She has dedicated her life to serving others even in the deep trials of life. She pioneered vital medical work in the rainforests of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is an internationally respected speaker with WEC ministries.

A Thought-Provoking Read

Have you ever been caught up in the troubled waves of dissatisfaction? Perhaps you've attempted to treat your hungry soul with addictive sinful behaviors? There is hope for you. Jesus Christ is enough.

Enough is authored by former missionary Helen Roseveare. This small volume of six chapters addresses the sufficiency of Christ for salvation, assurance and emotional support. That is, if we allow Him to be enough. Or do we want "Jesus plus" the added benefits of success, wealth or adulation? Can we thank God when He removes us from a place of ministry and gives us a thankless job that prevents us from using our gifts?

She delves into issues she faced as a missionary in the Congo: trusting Jesus, forgiving herself when she failed, and the sufficiency of grace. Even as a missionary she was not immune to pride's ugly grasp.

This book made me reflect on the meaning of the "fellowship of his sufferings." Our suffering can lead us to a deeper knowledge of who God is. I marveled at the strength of her faith as she documents her response after being captured and abused by rebel soldiers. She stated it seemed as if God asked, "Can you thank me for trusting you with this, even if I never tell you why?"

I highly recommend this book. It would make a great read on a long road trip.

Enough

I would highly recommend this book. New believers will have their eyes opened and be prepared for the trials that they will encounter. Seasoned saints will be reminded of God's care for His children as their hearts resonate with Dr. Roseveare. Another refreshing aspect of this book is the honesty of the author with her own struggles. I also enjoyed the way she ended each chapter with an appropriate hymn. Topics covered in this book include the following : salvation, assurance, emotional support, pleasing God, happiness, contentment and finding our sufficiency in God. This would be a great book to buy multiple copies and hand out to people who need encouragement.

I recently received a complimentary copy of a new book by Christian Focus Publications entitled, "Enough." The author is Helen Roseveare, who was a missionary in the Congo in the mid-20th century and witnessed (and suffered through) some terrible atrocities. In the book, Roseveare describes how she came to understand God better through the many of years of her missionary activity. You can really understand a woman who is united to Israel, which means "wrestles with God." The notions of God with which she grew up prove, in one case or another, largely untrue, and often Roseveare reaches a more BIblical understanding of who He truly is.

Let me start by saying that I liked this book. I would not recommend it to anyone, but it is nonetheless the story of a woman united by faith to her Lord and learning to find sweet repose in Him. The book itself is rather short (only 74 pages, including the Prologue and Epilogue), so there wasn't a lot of material apart from her thoughts with which to ground oneself in her story. All the reader knows about Roseveare is what she reveals in her thoughts about God. Despite that, she is forthcoming about her deficiencies and faults as a sinful human. One can sense that despite the book's short size, Roseveare wrestled to write every page.

Now let me turn to what I did not like. Again, I want to be clear that overall I liked this book. If Roseveare's conclusions about the nature of God were not Biblical, I would not be as gracious. Though she does not use the language, she clearly comes to an understanding of law-gospel and admits her semi-Pelagian attitude formed early in her life and that appeared to influence much of the rest of the book. But I never quite got the sense that she truly understood Pelagius' error. Roseveare appears unwilling to let go of the mistaken notion that somewhere, despite her sin, there is something good inside her that can grasp God's infinite holiness.

Perhaps her reference to having attended a Keswick Convention early in her Christian walk has something to do with this. The book itself reveals a woman not entirely reliant upon something completely "other," or "holy," but rather upon her ability to comprehend such a being through her personal experiences with Him. Yet the Bible describes our God as univocal - though man is created in His image, there is not even one aspect of God that is in any way identical to man. For this reason, God condescends to communicate Himself to man through man-made forms, such as covenants. In other words, God and His means are entirely external to man. Though He changes man internally, that is the fruit of His labor. We need not seek the fruit to explain who God is, for the fruit itself will not be perfectly revealed until our Lord returns in glory. Rather, we need to seek Him where He reveals Himself - through His Word and His church, which administers His Word and His sacraments. Where is the church in Roseveare's book? It is completely absent. Where is the Word? Apart from snippets here and there, again, the Word is absent. Indeed, I was left to conclude after finishing the book that had Roseveare not experienced what she did in Congo, she would be no more mature in her understanding of God than at the beginning of the book, when her own friends doubted her self-professed faith. Should we conclude that apart from such life-transforming experiences, mere humans cannot grow in their knowledge of God?

It is possible that this book touched a nerve in me, specifically since what Roseveare describes appears to be the norm for much of modern evangelical Christianity. We seek God in our thoughts. God becomes a subjective reality rather than an objective one. We internalize Him rather than find Him externally. This "god" is nothing more than a golden calf, crafted by human hands to make us feel good about who we really are. But it certainly isn't the God of the Bible. I don't doubt that Roseveare knew that God, for her understanding of Him is clearly informed by having wrestled with Him through His Word and, possibly, through His church. Unfortunately this isn't apparent in the book itself. Like I wrote before, I liked it for what it was, but I wouldn't recommend it.

About the Author
John Watson (1878-1958) was an American psychologist who in the early 1900's codified and forcefully publicized behaviorism, which became the dominant school of psychology in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s.
