What did you like best about this book?I've never been interested in bodybuilding, but this book held me to the end.� I was especially interested in his comments about food, supplements, and elements like salt and potassium.� Because I've lived a life fraught with allergy, I have massive amounts of prednisone in my system; though I've declined to take any more, the skin on my arms is so fragile that I constantly bleed under it.His audience at the '75 Mr. World was amazing.� Pimps in floor-length fur coats and fedoras?�� Ladies of the evening in miniskirts and very high heels?� That's not the audience I would have predicted; but it was at this show, where he won several awards, that he realized how much steroid use was in operation with the other competitors.Robby is a fascinating character.� I� hope he'll write a book for new bodybuilders with advice about food and other aspects of self-care.How can the author improve this book?Robby, I don't have a lot of criticism of this book.� Whether you or an editor put it together, your story is compelling.� If I were writing this book, I would take out some of the angry Weider references; but they are certainly not fatal.� I hope you're giving some free copies to gyms and Boys Clubs

He is retiring whilst his physique is arresting. He is quietly spoken and of few words in an activity beset by hype and exaggeration.To encounter Robinson makes him no less of an enigma. He is an impactful presence. He keeps to himself, even in company, and yet when he does interact, he is there in a fullness of engagement, a profound intensity of communication that very few human beings can offer.When one relates to Robby Robinson, you encounter the history, the man, the physique and the bodybuilder. Of course, these aspects are all tied into the one person, but it is the interplay of these components of Robby's personality that make him such a compelling figure.The history is, in some ways, well known. He was and is a superstar bodybuilder; one of the most successful professional bodybuilders ever to take the stage. He won an IFBB Mr. America in 1975, drug-free, with a 29" waist and 20" biceps. As always with memoir, it's a question of, is this person's life worth writing about? In Robby's case, the answer is, unequivocally, yes! His experiences are unique. No one else lived this story. I think this is precisely the right book Robby should have written. It's as if he's distilled every question that he's been asked through the years, about his training, his life, and organized it perfectly in 200 pages. I learned a lot about the sport and all of the anecdotes, stories from his life are fascinating. The combination of teaching, tell-all and voice (his sense of determination and bravado are pitch-perfect: exactly right for the sport) make this a great read.Writer and Editor - Linda Davis

Seriously, don't. You'll thank me.

I bought this book expecting it to 'lift the lid' on the Venice Beach bodybuilding scene and the Weiders. It barely scrapes the surface, and anything revealed is pretty much common knowledge to anyone who knows a little about the era. There are books that provide far better insights, such as Rick Wayne's Muscle Wars and Dick Tyler's golden era history. Some specific issues I have with this book are:
1. The book rambles on in places, with little cohesive structure. Opportunities arise to say something interesting, but these threads just die. For example, Robby gets some one-on-one time with the elusive Ben Weider and is excited to learn more about the guy. He tells us that Ben's office is full of Napoleonic art. That is all. Robby says he spends a lot of time hanging out with Arnold's crew, just listening and observing. That is all. Ken Waller is a crazy guy who has done crazy things. That is all. Just a bunch of statements and not many interesting insights and anecdotes. I know Robby was THERE, but now I really wonder if he was PART OF the muscle beach scene.
2. Robby isn't honest about some things, especially about his drug use. I have no problem with Robby using steroids - but I strongly dislike how he uses dishonesty to boast falsely and take a high road to which he is not entitled. The claim that he competed naturally until two weeks before his Mr World victory is just ludicrous. His description of taking steroids for the (alleged) first time is laughable. He suggests frequently throughout the book that every other bodybuilder needed a mule-killing truckload of drugs to achieve their physiques, while all he needed was some good old home-cooked food and posing practice. Incredible.
3. There are lots of typos, spelling and grammatical errors.
Muscle VS Hustle does not come close to living up to the hype, and anyone buying it to gain inside knowledge will be disappointed. It is a short book that typifies the term "vanity publishing".

OUTSTANDING! A TRUE REVELATION OF BOTH SIDES OF BODYBUILDING!

I must say that I have been a true follower of Robby Robinson since the early 1970's and I am really happy to see this book come out to tell how things behind the IFBB truly were. If you had followed Muscle and Fitness since that time, as I did, you always wondered and heavily suspicioned the use and abuse of steriods in the bodybuilding community. Most articles that were in Muscle and Fitness would not neccesarily condone the use of steroids, but they wouldn't admit the fact that they were being used and abused by the majority of bodybuilders in and out of the Weider kingdom. Even with Robby admitting his use, I still have the utmost respect for him and his sincere contribution to the sport of bodybuilding. Genetically, he was and still is truly blessed and is among the very rare who could have most likely and successfuly gone through his career without their use. Unfortunately, due to the apparent pressures from the Weider kingdom, it was difficult to remain in the limelight of Weider success without their use. I also had to give kudos to Denny Gable from this reading, as he obviously was not a bought and paid for bodybuilder in terms of his opinions, but one who was rather an independent thinker and stood for what he felt was right. It was also sad to see the way he was dealt with for being such an independent thinker. It seemed as though from that point of his being nearly exiled from the bodybuilding arena, that his life spiraled out of control and sadly he eventually died at an early age. As a former employee of several months for the Weider Fitness company, I always wondered what took place behind the business doors as bodybuilders came and went from the Woodland Hills complex to discuss business in Joe Weider's office. It always seemed that it was a very controlled and manipulated environment. Along with talking to various individuals that I had met there and after reading Robby's book, many of my suspicions and questions were confirmed. In many ways it is a shame that the truth behind the sport of bodybuilding has had to come forth in the manner that it has, but it is such individuals as Robby Robinson, along with others during his time and before him, who did contribute to this sport out of a motive that was and is very much genuine; that being for the love of the sport. Thanks Robby! You've done yourself and your sport well!

Honest, thorough, and very believeable!

Same age as Robby and never ever heard anything bad said about him. Always seemed like a class act and this book proved that he was and still is. As a kid growing up in Toledo, Ohio I was trying to look like the guys in the book but didn't realize that most were cheating. I had my own personal thoughts about what I thought was going on with some of the horrible supplements and protein powders, and training routines put out in the books. Now I find that many of my thoughts and assumptions, due to this honest book, have been substantiated. Here I'm trying to become like these guys but received lies about routines, supplementation, and no mention of drug usage. I worked hard, using descent poundages but only managed winning the city bodybuilding title, with no drugs. Pushed myself hard enough to tear the rotor cuff, both pecs and rip both triceps off following much of the Weider nonsense he had his people make up for Robby and the others. I've always felt cheated but this book helps to release some of my frustration. Just bought another copy and had mailed to my bodybuilding friend.
