In the distant future, a loose confederacy of terran exiles is locked in battle sixty thousand light-years from Earth, caught in the crossfire between two powerful alien races: the enigmatic protoss and the ruthless zerg swarm. Conflicts rage across the Koprulu sector as each of the three species fights for its existence among the stars.

LIBERTY'S CRUSADE: Behind the attacks of the zerg and the protoss lies the story of a lifetime, and investigative reporter Mike Liberty is determined to uncover it. But every new piece of information only deepens the mystery. Thrown into the middle of a war that may determine the fate of humanity in the Koprulu sector, Liberty reports on the escalating conflict and wonders whom he can afford to trust.

SHADOW OF THE XEL'NAGA: Bhekar Ro is a bleak, backwater world on the fringe of the Terran Dominion, and every day is a struggle to survive for the planet's human colonists. Yet when a violent storm unearths an unfathomable alien structure, Bhekar Ro becomes the greatest prize in the Koprulu sector. Zerg, protoss, and terran forces turn the planet into a bloody battlefield in their haste to claim the lost secrets of the most powerful species the universe has ever known.

SPEED OF DARKNESS: All Ardo Melnikov ever dreamed of was living in peace on the verdant colony of Bountiful. That dream was shattered when the zerg attacked the colony and annihilated his loved ones. Now a marine charged with defending the worlds of the Terran Confederacy, he must come to terms with the painful memories of his past...and the unsettling truths that may dominate his future.

UPRISING: She is the Queen of Blades. Her name has become legend throughout the galaxy, and that legend is death for all who dare oppose the swarm. Nevertheless, Sarah Kerrigan was once human, and an extraordinary human at that. Forced to become one of the Terran Confederacy's merciless psionic assassins, she carried out her orders without question until a twist of fate propelled her toward a destiny no one could have foreseen. This is the tale of Kerrigan's shadowy origins -- and the war that was fought for her very soul.

CHAPTER 1

THE PRESS GANG

Before the war, things were different. Hell, back then, we were just making our daily living, doing our jobs, drawing our paychecks, and stabbing our fellow men and women in the back. We had no idea how bad things would get. We were fat and happy like maggots on a dead animal. There was enough sporadic violence -- rebellions and revolutions and balky colonial governments -- to keep the military going, but not enough to really threaten the lifestyles we had grown accustomed to. We were, in retrospect, fat and sassy.

And if a real war broke out, well, it was the military's worry. The marines' worry. Not ours.

-- THE LIBERTY MANIFESTO

The city sprawled beneath Mike's feet like an overturned bucket of jade cockroaches. From the dizzying height of Handy Anderson's office, he could almost see the horizon between the taller buildings. The city reached that far, forming a jagged, spiked tear along the edge of the world.

The city of Tarsonis, on the planet Tarsonis. The most important city on the most important planet of the Confederacy of Man. The city so great they named it twice. The city so large its suburbs had greater populations than some planets. A shining beacon of civilization, keeper of the memories of an Earth now lost to history, myth, and earlier generations.

A sleeping dragon. And Michael Liberty could not resist twisting its tail.

"Come back from the edge there, Mickey," said Anderson. The editor-in-chief was firmly ensconced at his desk, a desk as far away from the panoramic view as possible.

Michael Liberty liked to think there was a note of concern in his boss's voice.

"Don't worry," said Mike. "I'm not thinking of jumping." He suppressed a smile.

Mike and the rest of the newsroom knew that the editor-in-chief was acrophobic but could not bear to surrender his stratospheric office view. So on the rare occasions when Liberty was summoned into his boss's office, he always stood near the window. Most of the time he and the other drudges and news hacks worked way down on the fourth floor or in the broadcast booths in the building's basement.

"Jumping I'm not worried about," said Anderson. "Jumping I can handle. Jumping would solve a lot of my problems and give me a lead for tomorrow's edition. I'm more worried about some sniper taking you out from another building."

Liberty turned toward his boss. "Bloodstains that hard to get out of the carpet?"

"Part of it," said Anderson, smiling. "It's also a bitch to replace the glass."

Liberty look one last look at the traffic crawling far below and returned to the overstuffed chairs facing the desk. Anderson tried to be nonchalant, but Mike noted that the editor let out a long, slow breath as Mike moved away from the window.

Michael Liberty settled himself into one of Anderson's chairs. The chairs were designed to look like normal furniture, but they were stuffed so that they sank an extra inch or two when someone sat down. This made the balding editor-in- chief with his comically oversized eyebrows look more imposing. Mike knew the trick, was not impressed, and set his feet up on the desk.

"So what's the beef?" the reporter asked.

"Have a cigar, Mickey?" Anderson motioned with an open palm toward a teak humidor.

Mike hated being called Mickey. He touched his empty shirt pocket, where he normally stashed a pack of cigarettes. "I'm on the wagon. Trying to cut down."

"They're from beyond the Jaandaran embargo," said Anderson temptingly. "Rolled on the thighs of cinnamon-shaded maidens."

Mike held up both hands and smiled broadly. Everyone knew that Anderson was too cheap to get anything beyond the standard el ropos manufactured in some bootleg basement. But the smile was intended to reassure.

"What's the beef?" Mike repeated.

"You've really done it this time," said Anderson, sighing. "Your series on the construction kickbacks on the new Municipal Hall."

"Good stuff. The series should rattle a few cages."

"They've already been rattled," replied Anderson, his chin sinking down to touch his chest. This was known as the bearer-of-bad-news position. It was something that Anderson had learned at some management course but that made him look like a mating ledge-pigeon.

Crap, thought Mike. He's going to spike the series.

As if reading his thoughts, Anderson said, "Don't worry, we're going to run the rest of the series. It's solid reporting, well-documented, and best of all, it's true. But you have to know you've made a few people very uncomfortable."

Mike mentally ran through the series. It had been one of his better ones, a classic involving a petty offender who was caught in the wrong place (a public park) at the wrong time (way after midnight) with the wrong thing (mildly radioactive construction waste from the Municipal Hall project). Said offender was more than willing to pass on the name of the man who sent him on this late-night escapade. That individual was in turn willing to tell Mike about some other interesting matters involving the new hall, and so forth, until Mike had, instead of a single story, a whole series about a huge network of graft and corruption that the Universe Network News audience ate up with their collective spoons.

Mike mentally ran through the ward heelers, low-level thugs, and members of the Tarsonis City Council that he had skewered in print, discarding each in turn as a suspect. Any of those august individuals might want to take a shot at him, but such a threat wasn't enough to make Handy Anderson nervous.

The editor-in-chief saw Mike's blank expression and added, "You've made a few powerful, venerable people very uncomfortable."

Mike's left eyebrow rose. Anderson was talking about one of the ruling Families, the power behind the Confederacy for most of its existence, since those early days when the first colony ships (hell, prison ships) landed and/or crashed on various planets in the sector. Somewhere in his reporting, he had nailed somebody with pull, or perhaps somebody close enough to one of the Families to make the old venerables nervous.

Mike resolved to go back over his notes and see what kind of linkages he could make. Perhaps a distaff cousin to one of the Old Families, or a black sheep, or maybe even a direct kickback. God knew that the Old Families ran things from behind the scenes since the year naught. If he could nail one of them...

Mike wondered if he was visibly salivating at the prospect.

In the meantime Handy Anderson had risen from his seat and strolled around the side of his desk, perching on the corner nearest Mike. (Another move directly out of the management lectures, Mike realized. Hell, Anderson had assigned him to cover those lectures once.) "Mike, I want you to know you're on dangerous ground here."

Oh God, he called me Mike, thought Liberty. Next he'll be looking plaintively out the window as if lost in thought, wrestling with a momentous decision.

He said, "I'm used to dangerous ground, boss."

"I know, I know. I just worry about those around you. Your sources. Your friends. Your co-workers..."

"Not to mention my superiors."

"...all of whom would be heartbroken if something horrible happened to you."

"Particularly if they were standing nearby when it happened," added the reporter.

Anderson shrugged and stared plaintively out the full-length window. Mike realized that whatever Anderson was afraid of, it was worse than his fear of heights. And this was a man who, if office rumor was correct (and it was), kept a locked room in the subbasement that contained dirt on most of the celebrities and important citizens of the city.

The pause dragged beyond a moment into a minute. Finally Mike broke. He gave a polite cough and said, "So you have an idea how to handle this 'dangerous ground'?"

Handy Anderson nodded slowly. "I want to print the series. It's good work."

"But you don't want me anywhere in the immediate vicinity when the next part of that story hits the street."

"I'm thinking of your own safety, Mickey, it's..."

"Dangerous ground," finished Mike. "I heard. Here be dragons. Perhaps it would be time for an extended vacation? Maybe a cabin in the mountains?"

"I was thinking more of a special assignment."

Of course, thought Mike. That way I won't have the chance to figure out whose tail I've inadvertently twisted. And give those involved time to cover their tracks.

"Another part of the Universe News Network empire?" Mike said with a broad smile, at the same time wondering what godforsaken colony world he would be doing agricultural reports from.

"More of a roving reporter," teased Anderson.

"How roving?" Mike's smile suddenly became flinty and brittle. "Will I need shots for off-planet?"

"Better than getting shot for being on-planet. Sorry, bad joke. The answer is yes, I'm thinking definitely off-planet."

"Come on, spill. Which hellhole do you want to hide me in?"

"I was thinking of the Confederate Marines. As a military reporter, of course."

"What!"

"It would be a temporary posting, of course," continued the editor.

"Are you out of your mind?"

"Sort of 'our fighting men in space,' battling against the various forces of rebellion that threaten our great Confederacy. There are rumors that Arcturus Mengsk is rallying more support in the Fringe Worlds. Could turn really hot at any moment."

"The marines?" sputtered Mike. "The Confederate Marines are the biggest collection of criminals in the known universe, outside of the Tarsonis City Council."

"Mike, please. Everyone has some criminal blood in them. Hell, all the planets of the Confederacy were settled by exiled convicts."

"Yeah, but most people like to think we grew out of that. The marines still make that one of their basic recruiting requirements. Hell, do you know how many of them have been brain-panned?"

"Neurally Resociali...

A nice Starcraft Anthology.
By Zer
This is a very good collection of Stacraft related stories--and has a pretty cool cover picture (though something tells me you aren't going to buy it just for that, eh).

It has all the good ones: Liberty's Crusade, Speed of Darkness (for me, and seemingly many, the best of the SC1 series) and, of course, Uprising; which I'm glad someone finally put it on paper, not only because it tells us about the beginnings of Sarah Kerrigan and the Sons of Korhal, which makes it wicked awesome, but also because it felt weird to read it as an ebook, at least for me.

However, as mentioned in the other review, it also has, ugh:-- Shadow of the Xel'Naga. Believe public opinion: it is bad. Anyways, you can just skip it, plus it doesn't have anything new; well, yes it does, but that's why spoilers exist, so you don't have to read the whole book and quite possibly cause youself serious injury--so yah, just skip it. They could've just added 'Queen of Blades' instead.

Now, back to topic: if you want a nice collection of some SC1 books instead of buying these three separately (I always found it more practical to have this one big book than all of those, anyways), plus the ebook, here it is.
It also has a cool intro by Blizzard's president, Mike Morhaime.
So, enjoy!

2 very good, 1 ok, 1 very very very very bad.
By Carlos E. L. Augusto
Just a "quick" review with my personal opinions, there are plenty others already if you look into the books one by one:

First and last books are really good. The first one starts slow, and I thought I wouldn't like it. I was wrong, it turned out to be the best of the compilation in my opinion. The main story in itself is not entirely new since it follows events on the original Terran campaign, but it's very well written and has much attention to details about the SC universe. You'll see yourself soon sympathyzing with the main character, and overjoying about the known characters acting like you would expect them to act. You can really hear their original game voices talking the lines :P
It's major problem is that it ends, much too soon.

The second book is just the contrary. WORST BOOK EVER, with all sincerity (and I can't live without a book to read in the everyday bus). In all aspects, it's gross: bad story overall, bad main characters, bad new characters, SC characters don't act like they should at all, no matching knowledge of anything SC, etc etc (read my review at the book link). Really, just skip this one. If you think of reading it because it may add something new and worthy to the universe (like I did after the first few chapters and kept doing until the end), even a tiny bit, know that you're wrong; it doesn't. It's hours of your life that'll never come back!

The third book is OK, so-so; it's not very engaging but it's true enough to SC. Has a few military acronyms thrown in that may lead you to Google, which I didn't like (small notes would solve the problem...). Worth reading if you're not too much picky.

The fourth and final book is also very good, almost as much as the first. It tells the story of how Kerrigan ended up at the hands of Mengsk, which in itself is the most promising plot. It also starts a bit slow, but after the middle it gets real good, and keeps up that way until the end. This book has a connection with the first, since it's a prequel to it. It's at the end for a reason though, and I also recommend reading it after the first and third books (don't read the second!).

All in all, it's not a very solid compilation, but I recommend it for the first and last books (which I would give 5 stars). I took one star off for the third book (which I would give 3 stars). I didn't take into account the second book (which I would give minus infinity), because I would have to give one star to the entire compilation if I did!

To Blizzard: you can say that you have only released mind-blowing games, but you really can't say that about your other products. How was a book like Shadow of the Xel'Naga approved?? It's utter crap and the authors clearly don't have a clue about SC! How about demanding of these other products the same love and high quality you give to your games?

Even Death Can't Keep A Good Sith Down
By Edward L Zimmerman
For those of you who missed it, Darth Maul is back. Yes, most of us thought he was long gone from the galaxy far, far away, but one absolute truth in science fiction is that not even death can keep a good character down. Just like Obi-wan Kenobi reached out from the greater beyond in order to whisper the mantra "use the Force" to young Luke Skywalker as he raced his X-Wing fighter down the Death Star trench, why couldn't one of the Sith transcend death? While some fans may find Maul's resurrection a bit bizarre, I personally find it a stroke of genius mostly because it keeps with what little we know of them thus far: they cling to life in order to seek out power and control over others, and, with his `dying' moments focusing his rage on a young Kenobi, Maul did just that. He survived death - in a macabre physical form - and, thankfully, he's back in the Star Wars universe to wreck havoc at the side of his brother, Savage Opress.

(WARNING: the following review will contain minor spoilers for the sole purpose of discussing the plot. If you prefer your reviews spoiler-free, then skip to the last two paragraphs for a quick assessment. Otherwise ... may the Force be with you and read on!)

With the help of the Night Sisters (see STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS television show for reference), Count Dooku's fallen apprentice Savage Opress combed the worlds of the galaxy and found that his fallen brother - Darth Maul - has survived. How? Hate and rage are the Sith's path, and only such powerful emotions could fuel the life force of a Dark Jedi sliced in half. Indeed, marshalling the forces of greed and envy can produce great benefits, as Maul has now been outfitted with a mechanical body in order to continue his pursuit of power. When Kenobi shares news of Maul's resurrection with the Jedi Council, Mace Windu and Yoda realize that the Sith have grown potent once more, and they dispatch an entire team of Jedi and Clone Troopers to finally destroy the Sith brothers. Can they stop them before Maul and Opress secure the resources they need to wage their private little war against the Republic?

You'll need to buy and read THE SITH HUNTERS for the answer to that question, but I'm comfortable admitting that HUNTERS gets kudos for bringing the dynamic new duo of villains to the galaxy. Granted, I would've liked a greater exploration of character here - so much of the STAR WARS mythology reduces the bad guys to merely power junkies - but this tale serves a simpler purpose: it puts this nefarious team back on the map. In fiction, villains have often been far more interesting than heroes. They often have far more layers, and they require far more nuance than heroes. I'm hoping that the Sith brothers will together enjoy a long, fruitful existence in the worlds that Dark Horse explore.

RECOMMENDED. More of a vignette than it is a story, THE SITH HUNTERS provides a great retelling of events established from THE CLONE WARS animated TV show that resurrected Darth Maul into the Star Wars galaxy, but little else. While it's great to see Maul back and it's great to see Opress chewing scenery with the best of `em, I'm hoping that Dark Horse can make greater use of the character who deserved more to do than he was given in his single theatrical outing (Maul). Might I suggest taking a trip out to your local comic book store to pick up STAR WARS: DARTH MAUL: DEATH SENTENCE? There's only a first installment out to the miniseries yet, but it looks to be a greater exploration of where Maul's headed in the adventures to come.

In the interests of fairness, I'm pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics provided me with a digital copy of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: THE SITH HUNTERS by request for the expressed purposes of completing this review.

This comic is aimed towards kids it seems, but it does fill in some of the games between Season 4 and 5 of the Clone Wars, so some adults might find their way to it. What's a bit more surprising is that the comic isn't bad. In fact, it has a lot of potential, but because it's geared towards kids it seems Dark Horse didn't go the extra mile on this one. The art is simple and bold, a bit like the old Clone Wars TV show. I prefer the darker and more realistic art of the other comics. The dialogue is sometimes simplistic, but never cringe worthy. What I really appreciated was the simplicity of the story. This is just Maul and Opress rounding up credits, causing trouble. During the course of the story, we get some great moments, like when Palpatine first learns about Maul's survival. The comic as a whole comes across as a perfect bridge between the two seasons and doesn't try to be too much by forcing in an epic quest. I just wish Dark Horse put in the extra effort and made this something adults could be proud of as well.

Not recommended for adults
By Alt
Sith versus Jedi, Darth Maul versus Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Star Wars completist who craves additional insight into the Sith might enjoy this story, but I wouldn't recommend it to the casual fan. The writing smacks of a fourth-grader trying to combine lyrics from cheesy pop songs with dialog from a bad Kung Fu movie.

The artwork is so simplistic, so lacking in detail, it left me with the impression that the whole thing was drawn in about twenty minutes. Faces are apparently optional; familiar characters are all but unrecognizable.

Only recommended for the rabid fanatic and preteens, who might not notice (or care about) the dumbed-down writing. Everyone else can safely give it a pass.

Excellent dictionary!
By Lynelle
In 2001 I bought the 19th edition while enrolled in an alternative medicine college course; when I saw that the latest edition was available I ordered it post haste. It is fully 200 pages longer, and has, of course, the latest references and terminology; also better quality photographs...some not too pleasant to look at, but, well, after all... The appendices are very informative, and I think this is a great dictionary for any family; not just for people in the medical field, or med students. And if you do buy it, don't pass over the introduction; it's worth a few minutes' read. Often I refer to this resource for general information, or when a family member or friend has a question about the body, illness or medical procedures. It has been very helpful, and clarified a lot of misinformation (or lack of accurate information) that sometimes floats around and is surmised as true. Even if you have another medical dictionary, you can't go wrong by adding this one to your bookshelf.

Great Reference
By JSH12
I am taking courses pursuant to joining the Medical Coding profession. Unfortunately, the texts (from Pearson) are woefully inadequate with regard to a glossary and definitions. After using a few of the references available at a local library, I decided to purchase the Taber's and am very pleased with the thoroughness of the explanations, amount of detail, quality of the illustrations and photographs, and the additional opportunity to use their on-line references.

A solid reference with a number of pluses.

Wow impressive
By Teresa
I have several medical books. I am a school for medical coding now and this is great addition to my library. Also give you online access for one year, one less book to tote around if your bags are as packed as mine. This book is small and with amazing detail. I just love it.

These diggers are darlings!
By Abbie
We have 2 year old Grandsons. Both boys love this book and want us to read it over and over. There is just enough rhyming to hold the interests of the little ones and yet, it is fun and relaxing for the adult doing the reading. The diggers take their bear to snuggle at bedtime and another has their sleep blanket. The illustrations are colorful and imaginative. This book is a great investment for any child's library.

It keeps my 3 year old's interest but the rhymes and the way the story flows is perfect to mellow him out
By Amazon Customer
Fabulous book for bed time. It keeps my 3 year old's interest but the rhymes and the way the story flows is perfect to mellow him out.

He gets really excited about pointing random things out in the illustrations while I read anything, which I love, but not so much at bed time because I'm trying to calm him. He pointed things out in this book at first, but when I said the first, "good night, truck, goooodnight" he fell into the rhythm and instead of going bonkers for anything but the words he was waiting for that line about each truck. And he said each one calmer and calmer following my suit.

This is definitely going to be a nightly ritual.

So where do they sleep at night?
By Penny S
I'd heard this was a really cute book, so I picked it up for the kidlets. They were immediately attracted to the big machines and enjoyed the book, my only problem is the question is never answered... where do diggers (and all the other big machines in the book) sleep at night? The kidlets wanted to know and so did I!

Star Wars: Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, by James Luceno

Throughout the galaxy, it was believed that Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker–the Chosen One–had died on Coruscant during the siege of the Jedi Temple. And, to some extent, that was true. Anakin was dead.

From the site of Anakin Skywalker’s last stand–on the molten surface of the planet Mustafar, where he sought to destroy his friend and former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi–a fearsome specter in black has risen. Once the most powerful Knight ever known to the Jedi Order, he is now a disciple of the dark side, a lord of the dreaded Sith, and the avenging right hand of the galaxy’s ruthless new Emperor. Seduced, deranged, and destroyed by the machinations of the Dark Lord Sidious, Anakin Skywalker is dead . . . and Darth Vader lives.

Word of the events that created him–the Jedi Council’s failed mutiny against Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the self-crowned Emperor’s retaliatory command to exterminate the Jedi Order, and Anakin’s massacre of his comrades and Masters in the Jedi Temple–has yet to reach all quarters. On the Outer Rim world of Murkhana, Jedi Masters Roan Shryne and Bol Chatak and Padawan Olee Starstone are leading a charge on a Separatist stronghold, unaware that the tide, red with Jedi blood, has turned suddenly against them.

When the three narrowly elude execution–and become the desperate prey in a hunt across space–it’s neither clone soldiers, nor the newly deployed stormtroopers, nor even the wrath of the power-hungry Emperor himself they must fear most. The deadliest threat rests in the hideously swift and lethal crimson lightsaber of Darth Vader–behind whose brooding mask lies a shattered heart, a poisoned soul, and a cunning, twisted mind hell-bent on vengeance.

For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padm Amidala. Separated after Padm’s death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime–and the unspeakable power of the dark side.

From Publishers Weekly
The Force is still to be reckoned with, primarily because Darth Vader continues to be one of the most fascinating dark pop icons since Dracula. Picking up where Matthew Stover's Revenge of the Sith (2005) left off, Luceno (Labyrinth of Evil) delivers exciting battle scenes and brave characters, including the beloved Wookie, Chewbacca. His ease with Star Wars techno-jargon is admirable. What's needed in this intermittently entertaining installment is a better opponent for Vader. Unfortunately, Yoda, the spiritual heart of the saga, appears to be in hiding. Instead, Luceno focuses on Jedi knight Roan Shryne; his Padawan sidekick, Olee Starstone; and other survivors of Emperor Palpatine's Jedi extermination. All appear to be earnest, if pale, imitations of Obi-Wan Kenobi. And where's Han Solo, far older than the Skywalker twins? Why can't Vader sense his twins' existence with his vaunted supernatural abilities? Too often the sympathetic Vader wallows in self-pity. Thankfully, exuberantly evil Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious) returns with more power lessons Vader laps up eagerly: "Where the Jedi gained power through understanding, the Sith gain understanding through power."

From Booklist
Picking up where the last Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith, ended,Dark Lord chronicles Anakin Skywalker's emotional transition from angry young Jedi to cold, ruthless Darth Vader. The novel opens on the planet Murkhana, hours before the clone troopers are given the order to turn on the Jedi and slaughter them. Jedi Master Roan Shryne and Padawan Olee Starstone escape death and manage to get off the planet, but not before getting a glimpse of the deadly Darth Vader, the new Sith lord who is the emperor's new right-hand man. But the former Anakin Skywalker is still filled with anger and resentment over what he perceives as the betrayal of his wife and his former mentor. As Sidious and Vader work to destroy the remains of the republic, Shryne and Starstone set out to rescue the remaining Jedi, who are spread out throughout the galaxy. Now that all three Star Wars prequel movies are out, expect plenty more novels along the lines of this gripping, fast-paced story. Kristine Huntley

Very good book... episode 3.5. The best of the trilogy
By Amazon Customer
This book was very good. The story was crisp, writing style was elegant, artful and never dull. Great insight into the struggles of Anakin, and his true emergence as Vader. Interesting new characters as well... i really enjoyed this book.. far more than the 1st and especially the 2nd (which is not good).

A lot of background explained
By Jose Quintero Frias
How exactly was the transition from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader? How a Jedi Knight, strong in the Force, became a full-fledged Sith? We can glimpse the beginnings of Vader at the very end of EpIII, but in no way this primal Sith, verging between two worlds, would be the ruthless Dark Lord shown in the classic trilogy. So, how Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker? The path was no easy... and is fully explained in this book.

The book is very introspective in nature. A lot of monologues and thoughts are in this book, mainly Vader's and Sidious' thoughts. Their fears, their doubts, their plans, their schemes; a lot of things are explained this way. The molding of Vader by Sidious, making him confront both himself and his power, coaxing him through his own hate, is worthy of a Psychological book. Interesting as well are the Jedi tales. An initial group of four, the story of Master Roan Shryne, how he, and his fellow Jedi, saved from order 66, and how they evaded the new Empire, is very intrincate. Naturally, there are confrontations, all of them very fast-paced and packed with action. And the book's epilogue re-introduces us with and old friend...

dark lord: the rise of darth vader
By Darin P. Greene
Well this book gave a great deal of insight into what happened to Vader after episode 3. The detail and description of Darth Vader's iconic suit and, his trouble with his new sith garb, was a new avenue of Star Wars. Plus the peek into the relationship between Master and apprentice in regards to Sith lords was worth the price of the book. Anyone who is a true Star wars fan will be pleased with the storyline. The introduction of many well known characters is interesting, and not corny. James Luceno is a great Star Wars writer, he deals with underlying issues of characters that can't be touched in the movies. I look forward to future books that deal with the early years of the Rebellion, and more rogue Jedi. This book is a must buy, and with it coming in paperback it's even more desirable. Star Wars fans sit back and enjoy this snipet of Star Wars lore brought to you by a masterful story teller, James Luceno. My only desire is to see this book become a movie.

Porsche 911: 50 Years, by Randy Leffingwell

In Porsche 911: 50 Years, bestselling author Randy Leffingwell celebrates a half-century of one of the world's premiere sports cars, focusing on the major themes that have defined Porsche's rear-engined wonder. Randy tells the whole story--design and development, racing and competition, engineering and technology, style and culture. All the iconic 911 models are included: the original 901 prototype that set the standard; the legendary RS models that made the little Porsche a dominant force on the world's racetracks; the infamous Turbo, the car that kept the performance flame alight during the dark, dismal decade of the 1970s; the fabled 959, the model that redefined the term "sports car"; the 993, last of the original air-cooled models; and the 996, 997, and 991, the liquid-cooled cars that brought the 911 into a new millennium. Beyond telling the story of the cars, Porsche 911: 50 years also spotlights the people behind them: Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, the son of legendary Porsche founder Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, who co-designed the instantly recognizable 911 shape; Peter W. Schutz, the Porsche CEO who saved the 911 from extinction; and Dr. Helmuth Bott, the engineering genius behind many of the groundbreaking technologies that have defined the 911, including fuel injection, turbocharging, and all-wheel-drive. Leffingwell also tells the story of the 911 community--the clubs and culture that surround the car. Together, all of these facets make Porsche 911: 50 Years the most essential book in any Porsche owner or fan's library.

Review
"Originally published in 2013, Randy Leffingwell's celebration of one of the world's premiere sports cars, is still a top seller more than 3-years later." - FLATSIXES.com

`an exhaustive history of the 911. I wholeheartedly recommend it.'

"Porsche 911: 50 Years is above all a celebration of a peculiarly individual car which in a rational world would never have existed and yet survived and prospered through a half century, evolving and adapting but never losing its highly distinct character. No other brand has ever managed this and Leffingwell’s achievement is the focus he brings to this compelling story. Some of the face-to-face discussions the author was able to hold with current Porsche movers and shakers would have been impossible only a few years ago and this greater openness has extended to the company’s image collection: the book is illustrated by a superb selection of previously unseen Archive photography. Leffingwell has created a splendid monument to the Porsche 911, which more than just the definitive sports car, has defied conformist pressures to become a symbol of endeavour and excellence." - Total911.com

From the Inside Flap
Porsche 911: 50 Years provides the Porsche fan with everything he or she could possibly want in a book. All the iconic 911 models are here: the original 901 prototype that set the standard; the legendary RS models that made the Porsche a dominant force on the world's race tracks; the infamous Turbo, the car that kept the peformance flame alight during the dark, dismal 1970s; the fabled 959, the Porsche that redefined the term “supercar”; the 993, last of the original air-cooled models; and the 996, 997, and 991, the liquid-cooled cars that brought the 911 into a new millenium. But more than just telling the story of these cars, author Randy Leffingwell tells the story of the people behind their creation: Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, the son of legendary Porsche founder Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche who, along with Erwin Komenda, designed the instantly recognizable 911 shape; Peter W. Schutz, the Porsche CEO who saved the 911 from extinction; and Dr. Helmuth Bott, the mad engineering genius behind many of the groundbreaking technologies that have defined the 911, like fuel injection, turbocharging, and all-wheel-drive.  This book also tells the story of the 911 community—the clubs and culture that surround the car. Nice non technical read on the history of the 911
By Blaine
This is a nice volume telling the story of the development and evolution of the Porsche 911. This is a light read with quality photos. It is not a model year by model year 911 book and is light on the technical details. Even though there are many books on the subject, this one has new interviews and technical drawings that I have not seen in other books.

Nice! Great gift option
By Lisa
Perfect gift for the 911 lover. I almost didn't give this to as a gift, thinking it might be a boring gift or go largely unlooked at. But he really enjoyed it; great photography and some cool information. Heavy book with a nice look and feel; great coffee table or home office book. I am glad I gave it to him, he is a new 911 owner and really enjoyed it.

Great 911 overview
By Tennham
Most Porschephiles (like me), as well as fans of other marques, are familiar with the literary works of noted author & photographer Randy Leffingwell. In this new book he has now done for the Porsche 911 what he did for the Corvette a few years ago; namely chronicle the history of one of the icons of sports car history in an overview with words and his wonderful photographic skills. I have added this new work to my collection of noteworthy Porsche books and if you love and admire the 911 and it's heritage (and who doesn't), this special offering from Motorbooks is a MUST HAVE!

Review

“Written in the same spirit of creativity and discovery that has propelled 'third wave therapies' into the mainstream, Levin, Hayes, and their contributors compellingly illustrate how acceptance, mindfulness, and context are vital resources in reducing the seemingly intractable suffering caused by addictive behavior.”
—Zindel Segal, PhD, author of The Mindful Way through Depression

“The addiction field is blessed with a variety of paths to recovery, and this volume presents cutting-edge, theory-based alternatives to traditional approaches. It explores some frontiers from which a next generation of addiction treatments is likely to emerge.”
—William R. Miller, PhD, emeritus-distinguished professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of New Mexico

“Steven C. Hayes and Michael E. Levin have put together a must-read for researchers, clinicians, and students of addictive behaviors and their treatment. This very substantive book is refreshingly diverse in both theoretical perspectives and clinical contexts of varying addictive behaviors. Held together by contextual cognitive behavioral therapy as a unifying theme, perspectives discussed include acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectic behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP), motivational interviewing (MI), and metacognitive therapy (MCT), among others. Clinical problem areas range from detoxification, problem drinking, problem gambling, substance dependence (including borderline personality disorder), binge eating, shame and stigma associated with addictions, pornography addiction, and smoking cessation. With the unifying theme of teaching clients new ways of relating to their experiences, including distressing thoughts, feelings, and sensations, this book marks the progress that already has been achieved in these areas, while at the same time providing a roadmap for exciting future directions.”
—Richard A. Brown, PhD, professor in the department of psychiatry and human behavior at Alpert Medical School of Brown University and director of addictions research at Butler Hospital
