Finally, it takes issue with the conventional view that postwar economic performance in the Third World has been disastrous, presenting a powerful empirical case that the gap between rich and poor countries is actually narrowing.

About the Author
Bill Warren (1935–1978) was a British Communist, originally a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and later a contributor to New Left Review. In his last years he was a member of the British and Irish Communist Organization. He is best remembered as the author of Imperialism: Pioneer of Capitalism. This unconventional Marxist analysis was published posthumously in 1980 and is still being debated.

About the Author
Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914) was born in Ohio and served in the Civil War. A lifelong journalist, he disappeared mysteriously in Mexico in 1913 while on his way to meet Pancho Villa’s army. Among his works are two collections of stories, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians and Can Such Things Be?, and a brilliant satire, The Devil’s Dictionary.

Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) was born into an upper-class British family. He emigrated to America at the age of twenty and stayed there some ten years, during which time he worked as a reporter for The New York Evening Sun and The New York Times. When he returned to England he turned to writing fiction and soon made a name for himself with the John Silence stories, which relate the exploits of a psychic detective. Blackwood became famous in later years for playing “the Ghost Man” on BBC radio.

R.W. Chambers (1865–1933) was born in Brooklyn and studied at the Art Students League and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, exhibiting in the Salon in 1889. He sold illustrations to fashion magazines in New York City before taking up writing and finding success with his collection of stories The King in Yellow, which includes “The Repairer of Reputations.” In later life Chambers published a number of highly successful popular novels, including The Restless Sex and Police!!!, the proceeds from which allowed him to settle in a mansion in upstate New York, where he devoted himself to hunting and fishing.

Walter de la Mare (1876–1956) was one of seven children of an official at the Bank of England. He did not attend university, but worked as a bookkeeper for an oil company for some eighteen years, in the course of which he published the poems and stories that secured his literary reputation. In 1908 a grant from the Civil List allowed him to write full time. De la Mare’s fiction includes the novels The Return and The Memoirs of a Midget, as well as many stories. His poems for children and adults and his brilliantly inventive anthologies were much admired by T.S. Eliot, who became his publisher, and by W.H. Auden.

Henry James (1843–1916) was born in New York City. His father was a distinguished theologian and a follower of Emanuel Swedenborg; his older brother William James became one of America’s finest philosophers. James attended Harvard Law School and, with the encouragement of William Dean Howells, took to writing criticism and fiction. After 1866 he lived largely in Europe. His many works include the novels A Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors, and The Golden Bowl, as well as many short stories.

H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was born and died in Providence, Rhode Island. His father died of syphilis when he was eight years old; his mother was later institutionalized for mental illness; and Lovecraft himself was a sickly child.� In 1913 he joined the United Amateur Press Association, beginning a career as a writer in the course of which he published poems, journalism, and stories. Increasingly drawn to horror fiction, Lovecraft was a regular contributor to the Chicago pulp magazine Weird Tales. His first book-length collection of stories, The Outsider, did not appear until 1939, two years after his death.

Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was born in Wales. After failing to gain admission to the Royal College of Surgeons, he worked, not very successfully, as a journalist and translator (most famously of Casanova’s memoirs). A friend of the mystic A.E. Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was the son of two traveling actors. Born in Boston, he was orphaned early and adopted by a tobacco exporter in Richmond, Virginia. Poe attended the University of Virginia, which he left because of gambling debts, and West Point, from which he was dishonorably discharged. “MS. Found in a Bottle” was Poe’s first significant success, and it helped him to obtain an editorial position on The Southern Literary Messenger in Baltimore, though he was soon fired for drinking. Poe married his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia, and moved north, where he lived in New York City and Philadelphia while continuing to produce poems, criticism, and stories at a prodigious rate. After his wife’s death from tuberculosis, Poe’s behavior became increasingly erratic. In 1849 he was found drunk and delirious in a bar in Baltimore, the apparent victim of a political gang that had kept him inebriated while escorting him from ballot station to ballot station to cast repeat votes. He died four days later.

M.P. Shiel (1865–1947) was born in the West Indies, the son of a Methodist minister of Irish and African descent. Shiel studied classics at King’s College London, flirted with medicine, then took up journalism. His most popular work in his lifetime was his novel The Yellow Danger, and Shiel, who became increasingly xenophobic over the course of his life, is said to have invented the term “the yellow peril.” His best-known work today is the remarkable apocalyptic fantasy The Purple Cloud. Described by contemporaries as “gorgeously mad,” Shiel had become a reclusive religious maniac by the time of his death. His last book, Jesus, remains unpublished.

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was born in Dublin and studied mathematics at Trinity College, by which time he was already composing horror stories. He published Dracula in 1897. Among Stoker’s other books are The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm.

D. Thin was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, and studied in Paris.

I can't say how glad I am that HP Lovecraft wrote. He may have been a little twisted (in a good way), but hope he lived as good as he deserved.

Your Number 1 Goal is to Graduate!

The author repeats this mantra several times. It's something to keep in mind when times get tough. No matter what, your number one goal during your 2 or 4 years of nursing school is to GRADUATE. Delegate housework. Work part-time or not at all (if possible). Study, study, study!

She does encourage students to get their BSN, not just their ADN, and brought up several good points about that. She gives ideas in finding money for school and has a section from nurses entitled "What I Wish I'd Known Before I Chose to Major in Nursing."

She gives tips on how to be more efficient, organized, be a good student, how to take a test and reduce test anxiety, how to study better, make tbe most out of clinicals, and how to prepare for school.

I loved this book. I actually had checked it out of the library because of the first person's review (didn't want to waste my money if it was a bad book), but now I plan on buying it. This is a great book and has tons if useful information inside. I think this is a must-have for every nursing student.

Awesome guide!

I agree with Sweet girl's review, I just started taking my first classes and this book has helped me to stay motivated and on track. She gives excellent advice and practical tips that I'm already using.
I'm also planning on buying it, so I can read over and over, especially
every time I get side tracked by all the stuff that doesn't matter. I also love the motto Graduating is your goal. My husband just finished grad school and wishes he would have read that book before he started, even though he's field is counseling. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting pursue nursing. In fact I'm buying it for my cousin who is going to nursing school too. I also read How to survive and maybe even love nursing school, which was really good but reading it, really stressed me out,it focused a lot on the difficulty of nursing school, it had a lot of information and tips as well, but I think Mosby's guide gives more practical to the point advice.

I just started nursing school and it' a good book to know what you're getting yourself into. It's very informative and helpful. No doubt, you'll enter nursing school stressed and anxious, but this book helped me see things a little clearer and understand what its going to take to be successful.

The detailed entries cover desultory peacetime action, administrative minutiae and desperate battles in the same terse military jargon: on January 28, 1922, for example, "Marines assist in rescue work after the roof of a theater collapses in Washington," while the entry for March 1, 1944, at the height of the Iwo Jima battle ("Marine aircraft participate in TF 58 strikes on Okinawa"), includes the laconic note that "VMSB 332 is redesignated VMTB 332." The march of dates and acronyms is interrupted by engaging two-page vignettes that feature loving descriptions of rifles and machine guns, tales of heroism and profiles of prominent Marines, including the "irrepressible" Major General Smedley Butler, who later soured on the Corps and denounced expeditions he had led in the Caribbean as an imperialist "racket." Innumerable photos and reproductions of paintings by Marine artists provide sometimes gritty, sometimes sentimental glimpses of Marine life and combat. Scholars will find the chronology of real value, while the trove of Marine lore will spark reminiscences among leathernecks.

Misleading subtitle, but it still has its uses.

As a new volunteer docent at the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico, I bought a few books to bring me up to speed on Marine Corps history so as to do my job better. The subtitle of this book makes it look like a good overall history, ready to be supplemented by particular studies. But that's not what it is at all.
First of all, I should mention the size of this book. It's absolutely enormous. Thirteen inches by 9.5 by 2 inches. It weights 9 pounds, 3.5 ounces. You'd think it would be chock full of useful information, but it's not. There are long chronologies, year by year, with numerous events listed, but with no useful information attached to the events. Also there is no principle of organization beyond the dates: insignificant items are listed along with world-shaking ones. It's hard to see how anyone could find this material useful.
Then why give it as many as three stars, rather than one? The reason is that the photographs and paintings are both numerous and first-rate. This is essentially a picture book and an excellent one. Not a bad coffee-table book either, if you have a particularly strong coffee table.

I loved it. USMC is the ultimate Marine coffee table book for Marines, Marine Corps historians, and Marine Corps buffs. It can be used as a tool to settle arguments or--when the recalcitrant refuse to be convinced--as a formidable weapon!

About the Author
After graduating from Williams College with a degree specialization in ancient history, Anson Montgomery spent ten years founding and working in technology-related companies, as well as working as a freelance journalist for financial and local publications. Great for preschool/early elementary age

I bought this because we already have 'Dragon Day' that we picked up somewhere and my 4-year-old LOVES it. I was excited when I found another one with the same characters. I'm not sure exactly why, but I find Dragon Day to be a little more enjoyable than Search for the Dragon Queen, but Dragon Queen was still really good. The pictures are bright and colorful, and a lot of the different outcomes are silly, which is perfect for 4-6 year olds. We read these CYOA books together and my son thinks it's great to be able to decide what the characters will do next.

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: “Stop trying to pimp me out to all these groupies,” a famous author and infamous cad utters in “Revenant,” one of three cleverly interconnected tales that begin Margaret Atwood’s superbly sardonic Stone Mattress. He is referring to an impending visit from an infatuated graduate student who is supposedly writing a thesis about his sonnets…which aren’t really sonnets (long story). Naveena—her name, he derisively but accurately points out, “sounds like cheese food slices. Or better—like a hair-removal cream”—is insufferable enough to be sure. The depiction makes yours truly nervous to be writing this review, but it’s all part of the fun, and these tales are fun, which is odd considering the sinister current that runs through many of them. But it’s as if the reader is privy to some sort of inside joke. This is especially evident in “The Dead Hand Loves You,” when Atwood playfully skewers the horror genre then gleefully indulges in it, and the ominously tongue-in-cheek “Torching the Dusties.” Fans of Margaret Atwood will certainly delight in this collection. A bit bumpy but Atwood is mostly in very fine form here

If the rating system allowed, I'd give this one slightly more than 4 and 1/2 stars so I rounded up to 5 stars. I was drawn into most of these tales and I think this work is actually a fine introduction to Atwood's writing, her finely crafted sentences, and often otherworldly (or at least in between reality and surrealism) themes. She is also excellent when, at her best, she creates detailed portraits of individuals. They aren't always ones I'd like to know but are fascinating on the page.

I've had an ambivalent feeling about a fair number of Atwood's books. Some I've liked a great deal. Others left me cold. But I can absolutely recommend "Stone Mattress." It is one I'd be happy to reread.

While I liked - often loved- some of the tales in this book, there were a couple which weren't nearly as compelling as the rest. "Stone Mattress", the centerpiece of the book, focused on a woman bent on revenge and murder for a terrible injustice done her many years ago. Does she succeed? I won't disclose that, won't spoil it for potential readers. But I can say that I never thought I'd feel drawn to a possible murderess and feel compassion and understanding for her intense anger. I do want to add that some of the details in "Stone Mattress" are gruesome - so be aware of that.

If I tried to describe every one of the works here, this review would be overly long so I'll simply mention one other which resonated with me, "Torching the Dusties". It portrays a timely issue, the resentment felt by some younger adults towards the older generation who - in their opinion - "messed it up" for the next generation, killing the planet with greed and blindness to their impact on the environment. The younger adults feel cheated and are outraged, determined to do something about it. Again, I won't reveal more details about what happens next. I hate reviews with spoilers.

I hope this review perks your interest and if you've never been a fan of Atwood that you consider revisiting her writing by reading "Stone Mattress." I'd be interested in other readers" take on it. I received a free copy of this for review but was a bit reluctant to dive into an Atwood book. I'm glad I dove into this one.

Margaret Atwood writes exposition brilliantly. Unfortunately, that's all this book is - endless exposition. There are 9 short stories in which almost nothing happens. The only one I enjoyed was The Dead Hand Loves You, but I almost didn't make it that far. This would be a great assigned book for a writing class, but in terms of enjoyment, I rate it low.
