This youth edition of Against Medical Advice (2008) adds an introduction, photos, Q&As, and other educational back matter to the story of the medical tribulations of young Cory Friedman, son of co-author Friedman. The main text itself goes unaltered, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A first-person voice gets inside the head of Cory, who we met as a four-year-old recently prescribed Ritalin. It is the beginning of a grueling 13-year saga that is as much a struggle against Tourette’s as it is an endless war drug cocktails wage inside his body. His condition is alarming: OCD impulses create violent tics that sometimes knock him over or compel him to grab the steering wheels of moving cars. Soon the happy child becomes a slave to capricious masters by the names of Paxil, Risperdal, Klonopin, and more. Patterson’s infamously choppy chapters actually reinforce the twitching and lurching physicality of Cody’s existence, though the lack of dialogue and overall swiftness do prevent him from becoming a fully fleshed out. MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero

MED HEAD, James Patterson and Hal Friedman's young adult version of the #1 New York Times bestseller AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE, is about a boy's experiences growing up with the rare neurological disorder of Tourette's Syndrome with OCD. It's a private view of Cory Friedman's home and school life as told by Cory himself, from age five through his post-high school years.

Cory is five years old when his troubles begin. While playing a video game, he feels his first compulsion to jerk his neck. It is involuntary, caused by "miswiring of his brain," and is one of the many tics and physical and verbal compulsions his mind would present through the years. He calls these years "the battle against my mind," and his symptoms are embarrassing and physically debilitating at a young age. With his first trip to the doctor, Cory and his family start down a long road of suffering and worry that doesn't end until after his teenage years are over.

Through many years of treatment, Cory is put on handfuls of medications. The Friedmans meet numerous doctors, some of whom are helpful and others of whom are just insulting and harmful. His parents and sister, Jessie, try their best to support him through the physical and emotional stress, knowing there's only more of it to come. Love and family support are often not enough for Cory to feel happy, and he has to do without close friendships or outside understanding for years. All he wants is for the people around him to "get him," and one of the most difficult aspects of the situation is the Friedmans' realization of Cory's daily embarrassment and social isolation from having a disease that no one understands or empathizes with.

Because Cory's disorder is exacerbated by stress and anxiety, reactions he gets make things worse. Kids at school and teachers often treat him as if his disorder is contrived or controllable. He's frequently made fun of, and this makes his tics and compulsions more exaggerated. None of his treatments help much, and at some point, he begins thinking of himself as a "med head." He is on high-dose meds and often can't deal with the side effects, which range from intense agitation to more pronounced tics, to keeping him up at night and leaving him physically and emotionally exhausted. He gains weight and becomes clinically depressed on certain drugs. Yet somehow, with the support of his family, Cory gets through this. After years of hoping and wishing and wondering about a cure (or at least relief from symptoms), he discovers he's ready to call it quits with all drugs and experimental treatments.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, Cory finds that there's one thing he does feel better on: alcohol. He uses it to escape his unhappiness. At age 17, he has absolutely no idea what he's doing and no plans for the future, but his alcohol use is no joke. It goes way past common teenage partying to where he is passing out drunk at home --- a lot. Once his parents recognize the need to intervene, their next step is a risky one: they send him to a teenage wilderness camp in bitter-cold Wyoming, essentially forcing him to discover meaning in his life while surviving camping in ice and snow.

With great, personal storytelling by bestselling author James Patterson as well as writer Hal Friedman (the boy's father), readers are presented with an honest view of what it's like to grow up with a rare neurological disorder. The story is based on Cory's memories and put together through interviews. And Cory is a kid who will win you over from the minute the story begins. In the moment he calls his mom "his angel" with the claim that she saved him, he had my vote! The Friedmans are amazing, never faltering in their love and support even while it had to be killing them to watch him go through all this. Yet it is Cory himself who finds the will to get past the anger of living with a debilitating illness and then surpass everyone's expectations of him. It's through his hard work that opportunities arise, and his accomplishments end up going beyond those of many who have had smaller hurdles to overcome.

MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero.

One young man's struggle: I'm glad it turned out well for him

The true story of Cory Friedman's efforts to control his Tourette's and OCD, along with his violent temper and addiction issues (drinking and smoking). The book contains many brutal, pull-no-punches descriptions of his tics, his meltdowns, his anger and his frustration. His family stands valianty by him; his sister is seldom mentioned. After a wrenching 13-year battle (approx. ages 5-18) Cory's symptoms, which he previously was unable to control, start to fade almost naturally, through an "Outward Bound" type wilderness experience and time spent at a neurological clinic where the treatment encourages him to focus on his tics and anxieties, rather than try to suppress them. It also helps when he weans himself off most of the doctor-prescribed drugs he was taking. Though I wish this young man all the best, and the story is interesting as a peek into a world of pain and suffering, I don't feel there are any greater lessons to be drawn, or that Cory's experiences can be generalized in any way for the greater good of readers. Maybe they don't need to be and the point is that Cory told his story and I can now read it. Note: This book was released a year or so ago, titled Against Medical Advice. Med Head, with its eye-catching cover and an introduction by Ellen Hopkins, is the same book, aimed at young adults. If you are an older teen reader and you liked Med Head, you might have a look at both Beautiful Boy (by father David Sheff) and Tweak (by son Nic Sheff.)

Corey Friedman is an ordinary teenager with issues that take all his strength and courage to overcome. This is an account of his thirteen year journey dealing with OCD, anxiety, and Tourette's symptom.

Wow. Reading Corey's story amazes me. What he went through as a child with the daily ridicule of his peers and then the pure hell of a life time of different drugs, totally is awe inspiring. My own son deals with sensory issues and I've dealt with a school system that wasn't supportive. I can't even imagine what Corey's parents went through. What is really inspiring is Corey's voice. His descriptions of the meds that caused serious issues are so real. I felt for him when this one so-called expert in the field of Tourette's, ends up just viewing Corey as a test subject even when the one drug she prescribes to him causes him to want to end his life.

Corey also shows the reader what it's like to basically be a guinea pig to a wide assortment of meds. His OCD and Tourette's were very extreme. One way Corey dealt with the pain was self-medicating with alcohol. But this book doesn't just dwell on the negative. It shows Corey's successes and triumphs. My favorite part is when Corey shows this one school founder that he will make it out in the real world. And he does with determination and persistence.

The story is haunting and Corey's personal journey through years of medical turmoil will stay with you. At the conclusion are notes from Corey's parents, personal photos, and also info on OCD and Tourette's.

James Patterson is the author of Maximum Ride novels, Witch & Wizard, and a number of other books. He lives in Florida.

Hal Friedman has published five works of fiction. He lives with his wife, Sophia, at the edge of a forest in northern New Jersey.

Excellent Companion

We had multiple rotations while in school. A lot of the time there was little to know warning what all went on in each modality. "Oh my goodness! I'm so nervous. What do they even DO in the Cath Lab????" Comments like that will be eased with this book. There are short concise overviews of things that go on in special modalities. Very helpful.

Suspenseful book keeping you on your toes to the end then there is closure

NSA asks cryptologist Alton and his FBI wife Mallory Blackwell to travel to the Galapagos Islands to assist in finding a US senator’s wife, Jan Summit. She is a world-class scientist on the verge of making a startling treatment for Alzheimer. Then her research facility is broken into and Jan Summit disappears.
As they follow the trail of clues, mounting danger faces the NSA team. They discover some people are not what they seem. Their search is further complicated by a string of murders that could be connected to the black market of exotic wildlife and Jan’s research. It’s a race against time to find Jan, who has a severe asthma condition or could be killed. Why has no one asked for a ransom?
The plot was interesting, with several twists and turns, so you need to put the puzzle pieces into place. You collect the clues as the NSA team goes along, racing to figure out in time who is to blame. Closure is at the end of the book so it could be read as a stand-alone.

I've been waiting for this one, and I was NOT let down!

This is my favorite Blackwell Files installment! Clever, edge of your seat drama set in a beautiful place. I enjoy reading this series because it is believable, without being too technical. Each character has interesting and authentic position in the book. This particular book had Alton and Mallory solving a series of crimes that entwined with each crime and developed as I read. I am ready for this series to be a television series. Very awesome stories.

What a joy it is to follow a new author as he develops and grows! Steven F Freeman’s sixth book in his Blackwell Files, The Evolution of Evil, is perhaps his best work yet. Steve, you’re not a rookie anymore!

After thieves break into a research lab on the Galapagos Islands and scientist Jan Summit disappears, cryptologist Alton Blackwell and his FBI agent wife Mallory are recruited to join a team of investigators to find the missing researcher and recover the important Alzheimer’s studies. Working with the local authorities, the team must find the researcher,
who suffers from severe asthma, as soon as possible. Adding to the sense of urgency is the fact that she is also the wife of a powerful US Senator, who is putting pressure on the group to locate his wife ASAP. Has she been kidnapped? Murdered? If she is alive, why haven’t they heard from the kidnappers?

While Alton begins the laborious task of decoding the encrypted research files, Mallory pores over financial records looking for clues, and the rest of the team interviews witnesses. As possible motives and suspects begin to emerge, dead bodies begin to show up in remote spots. Are these murders related to the missing scientist and her theory about a cure for a devastating illness? Or are they simply random killings?

Mr Freeman has introduced a fascinating ensemble of characters this time around. I was particularly interested in a several of them, and in one case, my instincts proved to be correct. Without being given many concrete clues, we are left to our own devices when it comes to solving the crimes in Freeman’s books. In typical fashion, Alton puts it all together after making a discovery or two, which the author does not share with the reader until the mass assembly at the end, a la Hercule Poirot. Having read the previous five novels in the series, I am used to this format and can go with the flow. As Poirot would say, I use “the little gray cells” to consider what other suspects may have to hide that may not be related to the case at hand. But I may have said too much – at any rate, it makes for a tantalizing read, because the pieces of the puzzle fall into place quite nicely.

It sounds like there is a bright future for Team Blackwell. Stay tuned.

It's a great handbook on how to organize a campaign to fight unscrupulous big tobacco, using the California experience as the training manual. So, it's a mixture of history and object lesson, written by someone who know how to teach. A different kind of book from the usual history of tobacco, and there's nothing else like it. An eye-opening "Must Read" manual for activists

"The Tobacco War" is part social and political history, part "how-to" manual. Not a dry catalogue of events, but written with a sense of the human drama surrounding each twist and turn of the tale. Co-author Stan Glantz, involved so deeply in the movement, offers the most incisive, comprehensive, and definitive perspective on the California anti-tobacco effort available. I was astounded to read of the intrigue and jaw-dropping audacity of the Tobacco Industry and its allies in the State government on one hand, and the incredible courage and tenacity of those fighting it in the most aggressive and effective way in history on the other. The growth in political savvy and will of the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society is catalogued in detail, as are the machinations of the State legislature, the governor's office, and lobbyists and pressure groups when money comes up for grabs. This is an outstanding text for the social or political scientist, activists of any type, and anyone in state local politics. The New Author is an excellent piece of writing, combining deceptive simplicity, lucidity and charm: a trick which in practice is very difficult to pull off. The book is also informed by considerable intelligence and analysis founded on firsthand experience.

Barnes explicitly warns against the trap that engagement at the required level can become obsessive and time consuming, and in a couple of nice vignettes he makes his point with wit and style. The New Author is a terrific companion for independent e-publishing and I recommend it.


There are at least three reasons why you might want to buy this book:

This book is a beginner’s guide on how to do the above. It isn’t a magic elixir for foolproof million copy marketing of your ebook. It is based upon the experiences of this author and a broad-based peer group.

What this book does and does not contain

The scope of this edition is deliberately limited to basic novel writing guidelines, first practical steps in building and operating a social media platform for authors, and the process of epublishing a novel on Amazon KDP and other market channels via Smashwords. A list of recommended further reading is provided that covers the subject matter, should readers wish to delve deeper into these areas.

This edition of The New Author does not contain a method approach to novel writing, advice on publishing in print or a prescriptive ‘silver bullet’ approach to ebook marketing.

The internet is a labyrinth of blogs, websites and web-based tools. User interfaces are constantly being improved, upgraded and changed. No screenshots have been included in this book in order to avoid early obsolescence and to keep the format and page display simple and readable. Hyperlinks to the internet have not been used for similar reasons and to avoid accidental use by the increasing number of ereaders with touch screens.

Truly helpful for the new and not so new author

This is an excellent Kindle ebook that really is written for the new author and will be immensely helpful to him or her. The whole process of writing a novel is covered, from start to finish (including how to format and publish on Kindle and Smashwords).

There are many ebooks on Kindle about how to write a novel, but it's not uncommon to come across some so badly written and edited that it's plain they won't be of any use to wannabe writers. In fact, their writers themselves need to consult a far better book on their own topic. And here is one for them now.

Not only is The New Author extremely well written by someone who knows what he's talking about, but the tone is also truly heartening for those who yearn to become published writers but just don't know where to start.

The writer doesn't attempt to go into writing technique in any great detail, but he provides an excellent summing up of the considerations to be borne in mind when embarking on a story, and also recommends other resources which go deeper into particular areas of technique.

Along with the revolution in publishing has come one in marketing, and the title The New Author can be taken to have a double meaning: it can refer not just to someone who aims to become an author for the first time, but also to the new online world with which more experienced authors must now become familiar. So the large section on marketing a novel online through social media and other methods is particularly relevant and welcome for authors at all stages of their careers.

After exploring the mad and slightly confusing aspects of self publishing, I was given 'The New Author' in an attempt to try and clarify all the 'whys and wherefores'. And it did! Other books I found very dry and left me feeling I was outside the head's office for being stupid. Ruby's way was a breath of fresh air. It was clear, informative and funny. He admits his own mistakes so you don't have to. It's a book you can dip in and out of, especially when it comes to promoting yourself. Technophobes need not apply or learn damn quick!
I would recommend this book to writers/authors willing to put themselves out there and a liking for turnips...
And thanks for all the elephants!

Probably the best one-stop shop for the indie author

There are swathes of books offering advice to the aspiring author about to launch his/her book onto the e-market, ranging from the excellent (David Gaughran's 'Let's Get Digital') to the rather glib and opportunistic (John Locke's one). Few have provided such a broad yet sufficiently deep introduction as this one. Ruby Barnes, a successful ebook author in his own right (and therefore someone who knows what he's talking about) takes the reader through every step of the process of producing, publishing and marketing an ebook, offering his personal experiences with regard to what seems to work and what doesn't. It's all done with a good deal of wry and at times earthy humour, something that's often lacking in this kind of book.

This won't of itself make a bestselling author out of you. It might not even make you a success. But it's the sort of book I wish I'd taken the trouble to seek out and read before I embarked on my own epublishing journey. It guides you between the pitfalls so that you at least stand a chance.

Highly recommended.
