Each region has unique histories, cultures, political traditions, heritages, issues and problems, and the way these issues are tackled vary from place to place.

This volume develops frameworks that are useful tools for heritage managers, planners and policy-makers, researchers, and students in understanding the complexity of cultural heritage and tourism in the developing world. Unlike many other books written about developing regions, this book provides insiders’ perspectives, as most of the empirical chapters are authored by the individuals who live or have lived in the various regions and have a greater understanding of the region’s culture, history, and operational frameworks in the realm of cultural heritage. The richness of this ‘indigenous’ or expert knowledge comes through as each regional overview elucidates the primary challenges and opportunities facing heritage and tourism managers in the less affluent areas of the world.

Great Introduction

This is a good introduction to heritage tourism in the context of the developing world.

In the introductory chapters, the authors suggest that heritage tourism is becoming just as important as traditional leisure tourism, and offer a typology of heritage tourism, including religious tourism and pilgrimage, diaspora and roots tourism, the focus on an expansion of cultural tourism to include the everyday and not just the elite, and an exploration of food and built structures (read: houses and such).

After this review the main concepts and debates in this field in the context of underdeveloped countries, there is a series of essays written by tourism scholars from around the world, focusing on issues in East, South, Southeast, and Southwest Asia, North and South Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

I have to admit I didn't read those later chapters in much detail, and found the first section more useful than the latter! Part of the reason for that, though, is that I was looking for information on Russia and Central Asia. This is an area commonly missing from tourism studies, and something that I hope will be remedied soon!

I buy most of my books here at Amazon but this one, I found it while in Mexico. I knew beforehand this Austrian writer, Stefan Zweig, and I was looking for the chance to read one of his books. What better beginning than to read this brief biography of a curious moment in history: the way America got its name. The fact is that there is no much to say about Amerigo, there are no documents reassuring his travelings on the dates he or others say those voyages were done and his life is of a normal chap trying to survive. We will never know what really happened and the only good thing about all this was that he was the first to proclaim that the west Indies were in fact a Novus Mundus.
Frankly, I think to blame only Vespucio is wrong. In that time, the Spaniards did nothing to correct this error, seems these affairs were of no importance, to a level that even the real discoverer of this Novus Mundus, Columbus, died almost forgotten.

Not the easiest read

Perhaps I'm so used to science textbooks, but I find this to be dry at times and repetitive. With that said it does help me study since Management isn't a second nature for science people such as myself.

The highest yields of fermentable sugars from cellulose portion are achieved by means of enzymatic hydrolysis, currently carried out using a mix of cellulases from the fungus Trichoderma reesei. Reduction of (hemi)cellulases production costs is strongly required to increase competitiveness of second generation bioethanol production. The final step is the fermentation of sugars obtained from saccharification, typically performed by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The current process is optimized for 6-carbon sugars fermentation, since most of yeasts cannot ferment 5-carbon sugars. Thus, research is aimed at exploring new engineered yeasts abilities to co-ferment 5- and 6-carbon sugars. Among the main routes to advance cellulosic ethanol, consolidate bio-processing, namely direct conversion of biomass into ethanol by a genetically modified microbes, holds tremendous potential to reduce ethanol production costs. � Finally, the use of all the components of lignocellulose to produce a large spectra of biobased products is another challenge for further improving competitiveness of second generation bioethanol production, developing a biorefinery.

Lignocellulose conversion stands out as a key process for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and chemicals. The use of lignocellulosic materials for second generation ethanol production makes it possible to minimize the conflict between land use for food (and feed) and energy production. The lignocellulosic raw materials are less expensive and they present a more even geographical distribution than does conventional agricultural feedstock. Residual biomass such as agro-industrial wastes, agricultural and forest crop residues and the organic and paper fractions of municipal solid waste make up a large percentage of lignocelluloses. Moreover, second generation ethanol production and use show lower greenhouse gas emissions than the first generation fuels, reducing environmental impacts, particularly in terms of climate change.

Lignocellulose conversion into ethanol commonly involves a pretreatment to remove the barrier of lignin and expose plant cell wall polysaccharides, enzymatic saccharification of sugars with a cocktail of cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzymes, and fermentation of the sugars with ethanologenic microorganisms. The commercialization of the process to produce cellulosic ethanol is still limited due to the high costs of current technologies, above all the (hemi)cellulolytic enzymes required to hydrolyze the polysaccharides. The enzymatic hydrolysis may take place in a separate step followed by fermentation called separate hydrolysis and fermentation, or it may take place together with the fermentation in a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of hexoses process or simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation of both hexoses and pentoses. The ultimate objective is one-step consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulose into bioethanol, in which all the steps take place in a single reactor where a single micro-organism or microbial consortium converts pre-treated biomass into ethanol.
