A delightful parable with an important moral, highly recommended

Ambelin and Ezekiel Kwaymullina (who happen to be from the Bailgu and Nyamal peoples of the Pilbara region of Western Australia) present The Two-Hearted Numbat, a children's picturebook told in the style of a folktale. Simple, charming color illustrations bring to life the story of a numbat (a small native Australian marsupial) who is torn between choosing a heart of stone that promotes strength and self-confidence at the expense of caring about others, and a feather-heart that promotes compassion for others at the expense of caring about oneself. The wisest of the numbats sends the two-hearted numbat on a journey to the Thinking Log, to discover the truth for himself. Only his heart of compassion can help him see the distress of a dingo that blocks his path, and only the heart of stone can lend him the courage to leap over a river. The numbat gains wisdom, and becomes a great leader. "'I once thought I had to choose between being as strong as a stone, or as gentle as a feather. But now I know that no one is truly strong who does not also have the softness to care for others. And no one is truly caring of others who does not also have the strength to care for themselves.'" A delightful parable with an important moral, highly recommended.

Has numbats in it, but unfortunately it isn't actually about numbats

Firstly I'd like to say that this book is a wonderful parable and lovingly illustrated, and if I only considered those areas by themselves then this book would certainly merit five stars, but reading through it I can't escape the feeling that the authors don't actually know very much about numbats. Maybe this is because they're from the north of Western Australia where there aren't any numbats.

Just taking a single illustration from the book as an example - a night-time scene where the protagonist numbat can be seen rolling a "hollow log" in the background whilst a group of four other numbats in the foreground chow down on some termites.

There are a number of things wrong with just this one scene alone:

1. I don't know what a meagre little animal of only around 500grams (~1lb) would be doing even trying to move a log. Presumably the log is for the numbat to nest in, but on the page it's depicted as being of a smaller width than the actual numbat!
2. Numbats aren't active at night, only during the daytime when the forest floor gets warm enough that termites get near enough to the surface for the numbats to be able to get to them and eat them.
3. Due to the above it's even weirder to note that not only are the numbats up and about at night, but to compound this they're also eating termites, which shouldn't even around at night for them to eat!
4. Numbats don't actually live in groups. Pretty much the only time you will see this many numbats in one place is when it's a mother with joeys, and that doesn't seem to be the case here.

I guess that this book is only a work of fantasy and maybe I shouldn't be worrying about the lack of actual factual truths, but I can only say that I'm disappointed. Especially so because there are very few numbats left in the world and more people should be learning about this unique and precious animal, and hopefully protecting it, which in my eyes makes this book very unfortunate in its ignorance.

Given the otherwise high quality of the book, I really wish that I was giving it a higher rating, but I just can't help but be disappointed with it. If the authors had actually known what they were writing about then I would very much have liked to have given a copy to my niece. It's not like there are all that many other story books about numbats out there.

Maybe other people might not have the same qualms about this book as I do, but otherwise I can only suggest taking a look at other works by the authors and steering clear of this one.

Richard Loveys has been a member of the Aston Martin Owners Club for over forty years and has owned two Aston Martins. He was active in helping run his local AMOC Area for about ten years, and became a trustee of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust in 2008. The first fifteen years of his career were spent in car manufacturing and distribution.

Short Textbook-Style with Pictures and Specs

"Aston Martin" by Richard Loveys is a decent little book. At only 64 pages, it is short and concise. It is written like a textbook. The only well-formed prose is the description on the back. As a quick reference guide, it is excellent. Almost every vehicle mentioned features a photograph. The quality of the book is decent: not great nor bad. The outside cover is one that attracts oil and feels slightly soft. The inside pages are very glossy and thick; however, the very first page featuring a picture of a red DB5 convertible has smudged ink and spots where the photograph was not colored in properly. Page 17 has a long dark smudge from a dirty printer on it. Although it's a very short book, it was considerate to include an index of terms, a list of abbreviations used within the book, and a list of 'further reading.' I will be taking advantage of this list, as this book has left me slightly wanting more story and less dry, cold facts. I do like having the facts, the pictures, and all of the specs. I do not regret my purchase, but I feel it could have been improved. I did enjoy the history of the company, but feel more could have been said.
At the end of the day, I'll give it four stars because it was interesting, even being very dry.

A must for IT pro's with a little bit of PowerShell experience

I definitely think if you are an IT Pro with a little bit of PowerShell experience this book is a must. I hesitate a bit to recommend this book if you are trying to learn PowerShell from the ground up, even though the reference and introduction sections are very useful well written. Along the same lines, if you are looking for a comprehensive book to teach you more advanced concepts in detail, This isn't the right book for that.

The book really shines when you need a starting point for a script or are stuck worth a part of the script. There are also a plethora of examples and some scripts that can be used out of the box as is. Some notable chapters are: Active Directory, Remoting, the Interactive Shell and Code Reuse.

This book contains A lot of good practical knowledge that is presented in a task based fashion. This book doesn't rehash the built-in documentation; but rather builds on it giving you a jump start to working code, saving you a lot of late nights.

This is the first PowerShell book you should buy, and may be the only one you need. I'm a developer (C/C++/C#) and Appendix A alone (language reference) makes this book worth its price.

Suggested reading order:
1. Part I, Part II Chapters 1-5 (fundamentals)
2. Appendix A (language reference -- best of its kind. Short, to the point, awesome).
3. Skip around as needed/interested.

The cookbook examples are useful, the descriptions are enlightening, and after Chapter 1/Appendix 1, you will have all of the "Ah ha!" moments you need to truly understand the great tool that is PowerShell.

Regardless of PowerShell version, get the latest edition of this book. I have all three editions, and it's gotten better each time.

Want to know why something works the way it does in PowerShell?, then this is the book for you!

With this 3rd edition of the book, I decided to read the book cover to cover. If you're brand new to PowerShell and have no prior experience with it, there are other books that I would recommend to you to read prior to reading this book. To me "Cookbook" is the perfect description for this book. It's almost like a comprehensive reference for cooking with PowerShell. It includes all of the PowerShell basics, but also dives deep into the depths of PowerShell and explains how things actually work. If you're like me and you not only enjoy accomplishing a task, but also want to know why something works the way it does, then this is the book for you. The only reason I would recommend other books to new comers is I would be afraid that some of these details that aren't necessary for a beginner to know might confuse them and make them think that PowerShell is more complicated than it really is. With that said, this is the perfect book for someone with a little prior experience with PowerShell.

This book is definitely worth it's weight in gold when it comes to PowerShell and I'm sure the physical copy of the book weighs a lot! By keeping my attention through two months and 1739 pages (EPUB), the quality of the book and the writing ability of Lee Holmes speaks for itself.

African survival manual written by a former soldier and reality TV contestant

Mr Vosloo served with the South African Special Forces and was a contestant in the South African reality TV series: 'SA Survivor', (which I've not seen). The book is an amalgam of practical information and personal reminiscences and musings. In my view, the final chapter, titled 'a short autobiography', in which Mr Vosloo gives his personal philosophy about the world, could happily have been omitted from the book, as it adds nothing of value to someone wanting a practical guide to African-specific survival techniques. It might have been more helpful if he had given 'real-life' examples of actually using some of the skills he describes, either from his own personal experiences or from those of other members of the South African Defence Forces.

The other chapters: 'basics of survival'; 'factors influencing survival'; 'survival skills'; 'navigation and energy conservation'; 'traps and snares'; 'survival equipment'; and 'survival in Africa' contain much useful information presented in a concise, 'bullet-pointed' style. The information is pretty much what you'd expect from a generic survival manual, although there are some real nuggets, such as the Latitude Finder (p. 125), the Quick Navigator (p. 104), and the Southern Hemisphere Celestial Clock (p. 120), which alone make the book worth reading. Despite his claim that the book is about African survival Mr Vosloo gives very little specifically African information in terms of edible and useful plants, although he does give slightly more information about African mammals. Interestingly, he includes a section on making snow goggles and snow shoes, which are not really relevant to most African environments.

The notes are reminiscent of a military aide memoire, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mr Vosloo hasn't reproduced information ultimately derived from his time in the South African Special Forces. The book is well illustrated with clear line drawings and a few photographs (of knots). All in all, this book is a basic survival manual which gives much of the same information found in generic survival manuals worldwide. It doesn't quite live up to its claim to focus exclusively on Africa, although it does include some rather limited African specific information. Nonetheless, it is still worth owning, especially for the few useful 'personal aids', like the Latitude Finder, described in the text and printed at the end of the book.

Survival in the Bundu!

"African Survival: How to Survive Against the Odds in the African Wilderness" by Hein Vosloo, who is a South African reality star from "South Africa Survivor" their version of the American TV show "Survivor" and is also the host of Woes survival TV series. Obviously, this survival book is focused to learning the specific survival skills to survive in the African Bush. Like all survival books, this one to also covers; shelter, fire, water and food. However, what makes this book different is the specific coverage of topics related to Africa which includes; general background information about Africa, flora, fauna, and primitive navigation. One of the sections I really enjoyed in the book was the sections on; escape invasion, self-defense and the tracking calendar. This handbook will become an indispensable guide for anyone who finds themselves out in the African Bush for work, recreation or combat.

One of the first historians to construct a Mohammedan history from the unreliable oral and written sources common in his era, Al-Hakam was from a reputable and well-respected family, renowned in the many branches of Hadith (narrations concerning the prophet Mohammed) and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). This made Al-Hakam one of the most qualified individuals to compile and record the Muslim tradition in Egypt in his day.
