One of the few instances where the film was much better than the book

Julia Child is still my go to author when I want to cook something special and out of my usual range (which is inspired by her)

I enjoyed the movie and was hoping for more insights into the cooking so I grabbed this when it was featured on one of my discount lists instead of downloading a sample. I should have read the reviews first. If you enjoyed the movie DON'T buy this.

It's NOT about the cooking or the food. It's about her trials and tribulations and they are many indeed. She's a Democrat and that's fine, so am I, but I don't need to know the presumed political affiliation of everyone she dislikes. Nor is she the first to be employed in a not so fulfilling position.

I can see why Julia Child is said to have been less than impressed with the book. It was as if cooking was a goal, not a pleasure, just git 'er done.. There is none of the overwhelming enthusiasm that she had for cooking. If you are interested in her as a person get Julia Child Rules: Lessons On Savoring Life instead

Maybe it's unfortunate that I saw Julie and Julia at the theater before I read the book. I enjoyed the movie. I found Amy Adams a little more likable than in her previous movies, and Meryl Streep was just spot on. As movies usually leave portions of their namesake books out, I downloaded Julie and Julia to my Kindle to see what I'd missed. That was on August 23; it's now September 11, and I've just finished. I've had plenty of opportunity to read the book in that long time span, but not much to entice me.

Frankly, it's rather boring to read about cooking, dirty kitchens, failed recipes, etc., over and over. There's enough of that at my house. Visually, those things only entertained me in the movie. The excerpts from Julia's life were much more interesting in the movie; in the book, they were very, very short, although I realize that the movie had more to work with since Nora Ephron adapted parts of Julia's book, My Life in France, into the movie.

Often, a chapter would begin with Julie in a new situation; however, she would veer off topic for a number of pages, and by the time she returned to the subject, it was hard to remember the start.

I don't believe I laughed a single time during my reading. Julie's constant complaining and whining became old very fast, and I didn't see that 365 days of cooking made much difference. One more thing, if you're offended by the F--- bomb, be prepared for plenty of explosions.

Powell's Souffle Falls Flat

Many a blog turned book falls into the "nothing new" trap; what we get on paper is just a reproduction of what we got on the screen. In her attempt to escape this pitfall, Julie Powell goes to the opposite extreme and tries to do way too much. The premise lured me in: approaching 30 and flitting from one temp job to the next, Powell attempts to do the improbable, tackle all of the 524 recipes found in the first volume of Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one calendar year. What could have been an interesting story of using a culinary challenge to provide structure and direction to an otherwise chaotic New York lifestyle turns into a book with an identity crisis. Part memoir about family and friends and life in New York, part story of getting closer to Julia Child through her iconic cookbook, part recounting the blogging experience near the time of its inception, part fictional re-imagining of the relationship between Paul and Julia Child - the book felt like a shouting match between styles and genres each fighting fiercely for attention.

Was the book diverting? Yes, and sometimes it was hilarious. However, there are a number of books out there that successfully do what Powell is attempting here. If you have your heart set on reading this book, go for it. However, I would also like to offer the following recommendations depending on what drove you to look at this book up in the first place:

If you are interested in Julia Child and how she (and others) have influenced American cuisine, I suggest The United States of Arugula: The Sun Dried, Cold Pressed, Dark Roasted, Extra Virgin Story of the American Food Revolution.

If you are looking for a food memoir, someone learning about cuisine to better understand themselves and a culture, try Serve the People: A Stir-Fried Journey Through China.

If New York is the draw, Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise is written by the former restaurant critic of The New York Times and includes stories of restaurants (with reviews), home cooking, and some tempting recipes.

If you are looking for great, laugh out loud memoir that actually pulls off the blog-to-book transition, but does not have much to do with food, pick up Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office

There has been a huge surge in the publication of food-related books over the past few years and many of them are excellent, but "Julie and Julia" is just not one of them.

Born in Talisay, Negros Occidental in the Philippines, Alfredo P. Alcala (1925–2000) was a legendary comic book artist. His sword-and-sorcery hero Voltar,�created in 1963, gained him international acclaim, particularly in the United States. for aspiring artists

This is a book for artists. It is straight forward and short. It doesn't get too complicated, but falls more on the lines of "gems of wisdom". The art is inspiring of course, but i think this book isn't just for the comics geek. This is about the life and attitude of being an artist. I'm sure Alfredo Alcala will inspire you. If you spend all your time in front of paper or canvas honing your craft this book is suited towards you and i'm sure you'll like it.

I remember in the 1970's being eager each month for the latest issue of The Savage Sword of Conan to be on bookseller's shelf. The black and white art in this over-sized comic book typically was much more impressive than that in the smaller color comics, and a big part of the reason for that was because of Alfredo Alcala. And so, when I saw this book was available (again), I couldn't resist getting my hands on it.

First...this is not a portfolio. This is not just drawing after drawing to ogle over, though there is plenty of art inside, it's not being reproduced on a frame-able quality.

Second...this book is only eighty pages long and more than a quarter of it is taken up with introductions (by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas, at least).

Third..."Secrets Teachings" is a bit of a misnomer - there really aren't any secrets here, but we do get some insight into Alcala and his technique and his thought process as he develops a comic book. And this is what makes the book worth-while.

Before his work on Conan, Alcala created and illustrated a series called Voltar (a clear predecessor to Conan), and this book selects one issue of Voltar and Alcala walks the reader through the entire issue, explaining his thought process to the layout of the page and for each panel and even why some things are light, some dark, etc. It was really fascinating to read how much thought goes into this from the artist's point of view.

Because, when I think of Alcala's work, I think of his incredibly detailed work, I would have liked to have more insight into his actual process of inking. I did appreciate his mentioning how artists need to be able to draw (not just 'finish'), and how learning about the human body and how it reacts in different poses is important (and he gives an example of when it doesn't work).

Alcala mentions using both pen and brush as tools in his art, and here again I would like to know more. I had always assumed his work (look at the drawing on the cover as pictured above) was purely pen and ink. Where and when would he use a brush?

Though I still have questions about his work, I really enjoyed this book, both for the art and for what I learned. I recommend this book very highly for anyone interested in art, not just comic books.

Ages 5-7. Not just abridged but retold, this colorfully illustrated, large-format book has a text that's longer than most picture books but considerably shorter than Burnett's beloved novel. McClintock's sensitive illustrations, apparently ink drawings with watercolor washes, will certainly appeal to readers and book buyers of all ages. The period settings and costumes have a charm all their own, and the detailed pictures clearly portray Sara's transformation from privileged child to pauper and back again. Some scenes and dialogue here did not appear in the original book, but they serve to move the plot along more swiftly. The story loses a great deal of subtlety in theme and character development (as well as plot and setting) in its adaptation to picture-book format. One of the greatest children's stories of all time.

This book was a favorite of mine in my childhood, and, when I returned as an adult to re-read it to my own daughter, I discovered it all over again.
This is a story about a different kind of princess than one might imagine; a princess that is an orphan - lonely, cold, hungry and abused. Sara Crewe begins life as the beloved, pampered daughter of a rich man. When he dies a pauper, she is thrown on the non-existent mercy of her small-minded, mercenary boarding school mistress. Stripped of all her belongings but for one set of clothes and a doll, Sara becomes a servant of the household. Hated by the schoolmistress for her independent spirit, Sara becomes a pariah in the household, with only a few secretly loyal friends. But through her inner integrity and strength of will, Sara Crewe maintains the deportment, inner nobility and generous spirit of a "real" princess.
It is a fabulous story of the triumph of human will, and good over evil.
This story is a real classic, and needs no re-writing to be as enjoyable and readable today as it ever was. Ask my 8-year-old daughter, who has already re-read it twice. Accept no substitutes, re-writes, abridgements or copies! This is a work of art, and should not be tampered with.

One of my childhood favorites

This book has familiar fairy tale figures, such as a wicked stepmother-like Miss Minchin, a fairy godfather, and an orphan protagonist who is a princess in disguise. It's the story of a little girl who endures some setbacks but reaches a happy ending not only for herself, but for those around her whom she helps even when she's pretty downtrodden.
The writing is charming and Sara comes through as a person who is determined to maintain her values, through good times and bad. She has a definite personality and that is a good role model for any child. She stays true to her beliefs in being kind, mannerly, charitable and above all, herself.
The magic in this book is unsurpassed in children's literature. When Sara comes home, wet and cold and neglected, to find that a magician has transformed her world, you can't help but be enchanted. I will admit to reading it again now and then as an adult. The charm is still there.
Just a fun factoid; A Little Princess was originally a shorter story titled Sara Crewe, in a volume of children's novelettes by Burnett.

Very abridged

As noted in the product description, this is a shortened version of the classic story, written for new readers. There is nothing wrong with it, except that a lot of the magic of the original is in the details, which are rather left out here. A somewhat regretted purchase, because the classic version proved to be almost as easy to read, for a child who loves the discovery of reading, and much more interesting. Larger print is nice. There are no pictures in the paperback copy.
