Good typeface choices and settings. It never feels text-heavy, so it visually makes for a non-threatening read, which is important for today's students. The use of the red text within each chapter helps to emphasis important concepts. The use of the timeline and list of tools at the end of each chapter is very good in placing graphic design within the larger context of human history.

About the Author
Johanna Drucker is the Breslauer Professor of Bibliographical Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has been on the faculty of Yale University, SUNY Purchase, Columbia University, and the University of Virginia, as well as holding a Mellon Faculty Fellowship at Harvard, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Getty Fellowship. Her previous publications include The Alphabetic Labyrinth (1995), The Century of Artists’ Books (1995), The Visible Word (1994), and Sweet Dreams (2005). She is also known for her work as a book artist and visual poet.
Emily McVarish is Associate Professor of Graphic Design at California College of the Arts, where she teaches experimental typography and writing, design history and theory, and topical studios. A writer, designer, and book artist, she has maintained a hybrid practice in San Francisco since 1990. Her work has been exhibited internationally, published by Granary Books, and collected by Harvard University and the British Library, among other major libraries and museums. Her writing has been featured in Visible Language and Design and Culture.

A Hard-Read! Only buy this if it is a class requirement!

I got this textbook as a class requirement and at first I was so eager to read it but every time I read my head spins! It gives me a headache! Why can't authors explain and use plain words that could be better understood by "regular" readers or students. This book is designed for those who have extremely high vocabulary storage in their brains or those who can process information in a snap. This book is NOT for regular students with average IQs. Sorry to say this but this book is a hard read! I totally agree (101%) for some here who made an honest review about this hard-to-read and comprehend book, though it contains a lot of good information. Sorry I can not recommend this book, take this if its required!

A handy reference guide that's definitely not meant for complete read-throughs

I'm a junior graphic designer and I love learning art history. I still own nearly all of my art history textbooks and refer back to them often in my spare time.
I had to purchase this book for a history of graphic design course, and though I found the information useful and insightful, the writing was incredibly dull. The authors explained everything in such detail, and with so little interest or enthusiasm about the subjects discussed that I quit reading after struggling to stay interested throughout the introduction and first chapter. I believe that textbooks should be written objectively but this book is formal and detached in the extreme. I simply find it difficult to develop or maintain interest in a book if the author can't manage to either.
Perhaps if you like straightforward writing bereft of tone, this is for you.

Informative but very dry in some parts

This book has a lot of information involving graphic design history, all the way from the very beginning of the recording of mankind's history. You man find some parts of the book to be hard to read, being very boring and dry, as many college textbooks tend to be.
