He offers to sit in for McKindry in the confessional. When a mocking voice seeks the good father's prayers to prevent him from murdering the priest's own sister, Laurant Madden, panic quickly sets in. The faceless voice behind the screen admits to a previous murder and also knows about Father Tommy's cancer. Tommy quickly calls FBI agent Nicholas Buchanan (Tommy's best friend since childhood) and asks him to track down the madman and protect his sister. A psychopath confides his obsessions to a terrified priest, whose beloved sister is the star of the killer's homicidal fantasies: Garwood's first foray into contemporary romantic suspense.Father Tom Madden and younger sib Laurant are close, even though the untimely death of their parents meant a childhood spent thousands of miles apart. The lovely Laurant grew up in a posh Swiss boarding school run by kindly nuns, while Tom was raised by the equally kindly Buchanan family in heartland America. Nick Buchanan, like a brother to Tom then, is now a special agent for the FBI. Tom turns to Nick to help track down the mysterious killer who calls himself Heartbreaker, but Laurant wishes he hadn't. Her immediate reaction to the "incredibly sexy" FBI agent is anything but sisterly, though his protectiveness and take-charge attitude trouble her. When Laurant realizes, however, that the stalker is getting closer every day, she stops arguing with Nick and falls in love. For the most part, Garwood avoids the grittiness of a procedural thriller and only hints at gory doings, concentrating instead on psychological suspense and Heartbreaker's increasing derangement as her somewhat formulaic story moves rapidly to a shattering climax. Straightforward style and brisk pacing zip readers past minor implausibilities, aided by a host of familiar small-town types, including a batty neighbor and a crooked sheriff. Readers of the author's historical romances (For the Roses, 1995, etc.) will be on familiar territory here despite the modern-day setting, and the frank sensuality of the love scenes is sure to please. Not my favorite

I adore JG historicals but I was very disappointed in this book. I put off reading it forever because its not a historical. I should have gone with my gut and not read it. The audio version was beyond bad. The woman sounded like a robot. I don't even think this book deserves 3 stars but there parts I really liked so I gave it a 3 star rating. There isn't another person in this world that can write historicals like JG and it's heartbreaking to see she has stopped writing them.

What I didn't like about this book:
Figured out who the unsub was immediately
Only 1 sexy time, and it was disappointing
No alpha male
Didn't feel the love between the H&h, and that shocks me because JG always makes the reader FEEL

I'll stick to her historicals. Even though I didn't like this book JG is still my favorite author.

Lost interest

I normally love every book I read by Garwood. But the guarantee way to lose my interest is contradiction. Did she write half then come back years later to complete without re-reading what she wrote? First nick wants the family and Laurent does not. Laurent had the failed relationship and closeness issues whitening had large close family then 5 pages later nick wanted kids and was never close to anyone. Could not finish it changing personalities and back story within a few chapters.

A story you have to start on Friday night

Julie does contemporary with all the right stuff; mystery, thriller, who-done-it, suspense and romance in a story you have to start on Friday night. You won't want to put it down even to answer the phone. The spiteful actions of one man wanting to make a name for himself have repercussions that astound time and time again. Pay attention to the details because every word is woven intricately into the whole. The FBI, the psychiatrist, the churchman, the serial killer, the woman - everyone has a part. Obsessions, egoes, power, narcissism, competition, and the race to identify the killer before he gets to the heroine.
It begins in the confessional and ends with a showdown. The best thing about it is that this is the book that begins the Buchanan / Renard series, so there are lots more to read. You will wonder why you haven't read Julie Garwood before.

About the Author

From the production of benefit concerts to the study of music as a social indicator, Reebee Garofalo has promoted the use of music as a community resource and an educational tool. Since 1978, Garofalo has taught at UMass Boston, where he is affiliated with the College of Public and Community Service and the American Studies Program. As the former Associate Dean of CPCS, Garofalo has been in the forefront of introducing information technology to the college and is the founder of the college’s degree program in Community Media and Technology.

Garofalo’s most recent book is Rockin’ Out: Popular Music in the USA, 4th Edition (Prentice-Hall, 2008). He is also co-editor of Policing Pop (Temple University Press, 2003), editor of Rockin’ the Boat: Mass Music and Mass Movements (South End Press, 1992), and co-author of Rock ‘n’ Roll is Here to Pay: The History and Politics of the Music Industry (Nelson-Hall, 1977). In addition, he has written numerous articles on copyright and digital downloading, racism, censorship, the political uses of music, and the globalization of the music industry for popular as well as scholarly publications and has lectured internationally on a broad range of subjects relating to the operations of the music industry.

Garofalo has also made his Genealogy of Pop/Rock Music available on the World Wide Web and has created a number of multi-media tools for teaching popular music. His presentations and consultancies have included Farm Aid, the Experience Music Project, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as numerous academic and community-based conferences and organizations. Garofalo has been active in promoting popular music studies internationally, as a member of the Executive Committee and past Chairperson of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music-US, and an editor for several popular music journals, including the Journal of Popular Music Studies. He also sits on the National Advisory Board of the Archives of African American Music and Culture and serves as a member of the Living Histories Committee of the Grammy Foundation.

At the local level, Garofalo was a co-founder and past President of Massachusetts Rock Against Racism. He has served on the boards of Boston’s public access cable facility (BNN-TV), Somerville Community Access Television (SCAT), and ZUMIX, Inc, a community-based project in East Boston dedicated to youth empowerment through music. He is also a member of the organizing committee for the HONK! Festival, an annual gathering of activist street bands in Somerville. For relaxation, he enjoys drumming and singing with the Blue Suede Boppers, a fifties rock ‘n’ roll band, and marching with the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band, a New Orleans-style street band.

In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2010 Summer Teacher Institute, "Rockin' Out" by Garofalo was highly recommeded and used in the course. The book is extensive and easy to read and understand and covers a wide range of rock periods.

Ellie Herman, author of Pilates for Dummies, Pilates Props Workbook, and Pilates Workbook on the Ball, continually strives to expand her approach to bringing balance back to the body. A former dancer and choreographer, she runs two successful Pilates studios in San Francisco and Oakland, and is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist. Ellie offers Pilates teacher trainings twice a year in San Francisco and travels around the world to train Pilates instructors.

Worth the price for pages 12 to 27 alone

Yes, it's hideously expensive, but I think the pages from 12 to 27 alone justify the price. They might be subtitled: "How Not to Cripple or Kill Yourself on the Reformer." Pages 14-19 include excellently described and photographed "Pilates Alphabet," in other words, the basic positions from which you generally move to or return from other exercises. Pages 20 - 21 cover "General Movement Vocabulary," again, excellently described and photographed. Pages 22 - 23 cover the famous "Neutral Spine, Neutral Pelvis," which are so critical to Pilates and, in fact, nearly all exercises, including things you'd think wouldn't relates to Pilates at all, like arm presses from a weight bench. and pages 24 to 27 cover what I have called "how not to cripple or kill yourself" on the Reformer. Here she covers "Spinal Flexion" and "Spinal Extension," each section including discusions about "General Contraindications," "Disc Dysfunction," and "Caution."

Because absolute precision of movement is so critically important in Pilates exercises (no "good enough for the weight room" here), these pages should be in every book, CD, or DVD ever published on anything even remotely concerning Pilates. For instructors, she also includes a brief description on "Assisting People." Surprisingly, that's where she has put some critical information on "teaching prone back extension exercises to folks with weak abdominals, glutes, and hamstrings." This one paragraph should be printed in large letters anywhere there's a Reformer available to the public. Now I know why health clubs don't leave Reformers out in the open. Although, come to think of it, you could do the same amount of damage with, say, a leg press sled. "Oh, I can do 250," I told my trainer one day. "Put on another ten." BUT can you walk the next day is the question.

The rest of the book is, as described by other reviewers, absolutely excellent. I think the highest compliment is to say, "It's actually worth its outrageous price." I'm glad I bought it.

I bought a used pilate reformer machine and this book is perfect. It has pictures, tells you exactly how to do the exercise. Definitely worth the money!!!

Modern Interpretations of Criminal Law

The text is disjointed and full of cheesy lines such as, "Eight out of ten guardian angels prefer...." Downes touches on many aspects of their daily lives, but does not clearly outline any of them. She starts by introducing specific personalities, then quickly jumps into a description of their appearance and dress, then flips back to the jobs mentioned earlier such as making snowflakes, baking angel-food cake, and fixing stars. Readers with an eye for detail will enjoy the artistic, hand-embroidered illustrations. The pleasantness of the pictures, however, does not save this muddled offering. Dressing up angels is a lot like dressing up dolls, and kids who love choosing outfits will love this book. Downes's intricate embroidery illustrations revel in the details of what angels look like, the clothes they wear, and the ``jobs'' they do. For example, some angels are shod in delicate slippers with bells on their toes, while others wear boots ``to help little devils mind their own business.'' Hairstyles vary from the prim Victorian called ``Roly Poly'' to the spiked 'do named ``Lightning.'' Angel occupations include celestial duties like making snowflakes, taking flying lessons, and creating weather, as well as baking and choir-singing. Every Little Angel's Handbook

My three-year old daughter loves this book. We borrowed it from the library and she reads it every night. The book discusses different types of angels and what their "duties" are. It is not a religious book, by any means, just a sweet book about angels. The pictures look like embroidered angels. very good book!

About the Author
Dorothy Sue Cobble lives in Princeton, New Jersey, and teaches at Rutgers University, where she is the Distinguished Professor of History and Labor Studies.

Linda Gordon, winner of two Bancroft Prizes and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, is the author of The Second Coming of the KKK, Dorothea Lange and Impounded, and the coauthor of Feminism Unfinished. She is the Florence Kelley Professor of History at New York University and lives in New York and Madison, Wisconsin.

Astrid Henry is the Louise R. Noun Chair of Women’s Studies at Grinnell College. She lives in Grinnell, Iowa.

Must Read on Feminism

I heard the three authors on C-SPAN 2 November 1st and was impressed by their vast knowledge, spirited commitment, and eloquence. Their book is truly indispensable. It helps the reader understand the complexity and vital importance of feminism. It celebrates the gains made and makes clear the liberation of women from male domination in this country and throughout the world has a long way to go. Ordered the book on Amazon and received it the next day, Sunday, November 2nd. Don't be put off by the garish jacket design. The book is well bound, contains helpful pictures and illustrations, and has a splendid color photo of the engaging authors. It is indexed and has a helpful list of books for further reading.

Substantial work, well documented and the full picture of the women's liberation movement; some turns and twists found nowhere that I've been able to find that offer a richer and more profound experience of that part of our history.

About the Author

Harry Key is from Australia but currently based in London. He trained as an actor before moving to India where he worked as a Bollywood actor and as a voice artist.

He is now a speech and confidence coach, helping people speak with flair and authenticity. He also runs flirting workshops and delivers training programs for a variety of corporate clients, including the BBC Worldwide, GSK and MTV.

Seventeenth-century Tokyo is the setting for Rowland's debut novel, a murder mystery starring the Senior Police Commander in the district of Edo. The man is a peasant, the woman the high-born daughter of an important official. Told by his superior to close the case without an investigation, Sano, suspecting murder, determines to investigate on his own. He orders an illegal autopsy and learns that the victims did not drown but cannot make his discovery known. Amidst many tribulations, he uncovers a trail of corruption and intrigue that ultimately leads him to suspect a member of a royal family. Replete with convincing details, the setting's time and place provide lively and diverting passages; the plot, however, twists only occasionally before its fairly predictable, politically rooted resolution. Rowland crafts a competent mystery her first time out, shows sure command of her background material and demonstrates that she is a writer of depth and potential.

YA?Sano Ichiro suspects that a ritual love suicide (shinju) is in reality a double murder, but his boss inexplicably orders him to drop the investigation. As samurai, Sano must obey or dishonor his father. The quest for justice, however, impels him to risk all to uncover the truth. His course causes more deaths and reveals the depravity of a powerful family that plots to assassinate the shogun. Sano is an unlikely, headstrong hero whose talk and stumbling actions endanger others. His repeated weighing of the samurai code of loyalty and duty versus the pursuit of justice slows the plot occasionally, but not seriously. The descriptions of the lives of townspeople, samurai, the privileged class, and inhabitants of the "pleasure district" in 17th-century Edo (Tokyo) are brutal, but rich and sensual, especially the Tea Ceremony and New Year celebrations. As a newly appointed yoriki (senior police commander), Sano Ichiro is expected to obey his superior's order to treat the deaths of an upper-class woman and a commoner as a shinju (ritual double suicide). Sano believes the two were murdered and doggedly continues to investigate, risking his job and his life. He gradually uncovers a plot against the shogun himself. The best part of this first novel is the splendid evocation of late 17th-century Edo. The descriptions of the stratified society, the details of everyday life, and the sights and sounds of the city that will later become Tokyo are vivid and compelling. Readers intrigued with unusual settings for their mysteries will enjoy this work. Others may not be able to ignore the paper-thin characterizations and the coincidence-strewn plot. The last paragraph leaves an opening for a sequel. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.

'Shinju' is a mystery about a supposed ritual double lovers' suicide (the title is the term that is used to refer to that act) that is in actuality a murder. Ichiro Sano, a young man recently appointed 'yoriki'(policeman) is assigned to a cursory investigation of what most of his colleagues and superiors view as a dishonorable and distasteful incident. Sano's takes his duties seriously, however, and almost loses his life -- and more importantly -- his honor in uncovering both a disturbing crime and a treasonous plot. Set against the backdrop of the Tokugawa Shogunate, this novel is educational as well as entertaining, and I really didn't know where the plot would take me as I read; the hero gets in some pretty dangerous situations. Rowland really paints a realistic picture of Japan in the 17th Century, with its dependence on personal obligation and honor. It's both frustrating and eye-opening for the reader to discover that although the hero knows 'whodunnit', his society prohibits him from bringing the guilty party (or in this case 'parties') to justice.

Fascinating history, mediocre writing & puzzle

Rowland is great at making 17th century Japan seem real, and goes into exquisite detail about the material (and, more crassly, moral) circumstances in which her characters live. That alone made the book worth reading, and made me interested in reading Bundori as a follow-up. However, Shinju has serious drawbacks. Anyone who reads mysteries regularly will have no trouble solving Shinju by halfway through the book. The main problem, though, is Rowland's ponderous writing. Her action scenes and urban descriptions are great; but anything about characters' thoughts and motivations gets wordy and dull very fast. Instead of letting readers figure out why characters respond as they do (except for the highly-scrutable inscrutable suspects) she beats to death the possibilities with lists of questions the characters are supposed to have flashing through their minds. In addition, no one moves a muscle in this story without Rowland reporting on its flexion. It's as if she do! ! esn't trust the readers to be as smart as she is. That's annoying. Shinju is a lovely historical tapestry, and compelling as a result. Frankly, I think Rowland should drop the mystery element (which is profoundly unsatisfying) and just write novels of 17th Century Japan. They would probably be great.

Interesting Setting, Less Compelling Mystery

A highly detailed series debut set in Tokyo (Edo) circa 1690. The detective is a newly appointed samurai police officer who quickly manages to piss off his boss and underlings by sticking his naively inquisitive nose into various matters, most notably, a ritual lovers' suicide he is ordered not to investigate. Of course our hero has an inner conflict which rages between duty and justice which battles most of the book, as he gets himself deeper and deeper in hot water. The mystery itself is nothing special, and relies on a villain who is more than slightly crazed. The fun in the book is in all the little details about urban Japanese life and customs of the era, as well as the political background. This is presented very fluidly and is well-woven into the plot.
