About the Author
Sonali Dev has published several articles on art, architecture, and movies in the Indian Architect and Builder magazine. She was also an assistant editor at Architectural Journal in Mumbai, India. She coordinates Windy City Romance Writers' of America Four Seasons romance writing contest. Sonali lives in Chicago.

Hero Not a Keeper

I started reading this book thinking I'd never make it through because the hero, Samir, was absolutely disgusting in his treatment of the women he dated. He's in bed with his current girlfriend and she tells him she loves him. Samir thinks "Why did they do this - every single one of them? Why did they have to ruin a perfectly good, perfectly mind-numbing f*** this way? Why?" One - I find it hard to believe that every woman he meets falls in love with him and two - if he can't figure out how he gets into this position, I can see him years down the road wondering how he finds himself in other women's beds as he drives home to his wife. So, not exactly a keeper.
I liked the heroine, Mili, a lot and really enjoyed the view into a different way of life. I've read some discussion about whether A Bollywood Affair is Indian enough and if Sonali Dev is qualified to write about Indian lives, and I am not impressed. The story is interesting and I enjoyed it.
Samir is redeemed at the end, but not enough to give this book four stars. His family screwed over Mili's family pretty badly and if Samir hadn't fallen in love with Mili I don't think he would have thought twice about leaving them destitute.

There is nothing like the joy of reading a five star book and finding the words to share it with other readers. Mili Rathod could easily have been a Mary Sue, one of those good girls it is hard to relate to. Instead Ms. Dev has given us a heroine that is innocent, good to the bone, concerned for the welfare of others and trying to make a difference in her world. Mili was married at four years old to Virat Rathod. Mili's grandmother had raised her daughter and married her off when she lost her daughter and son-in-law and had to raise their daughter. She scraped together a dowry for Virat's grandfather and waited for them to take Mili. Virat joined the Air Force and annulled the marriage, but the grandfather stopped the paperwork and continued to run through all Mili's assets. At 24, she was still waiting for her husband to come get her while educating and preparing herself to be an officer's wife. She get a chance to study in the US and sells her dowry jewels to buy her plane ticket. She lives in a ghetto and washes dishes in a Chinese restaurant to make money to send to her grandmother.
Sounds depressing, but it is not. Mili is full of laughter and has accepted her lot in life. She is still trying to prove she is worthy of affection. Her room mate is a drama queen who is about to elope because her family wants her to marry a cardiologist and she is in love with a computer programmer grad student. Meantime, the grandmother has taken matters in her own hands and files a lawsuit to get her grandaughter a legal share of Virat's grandfather's estate and force him to come and get her. His wife is pregnant and his plane crashes. Virat learns that the marriage is legal and he will have to get an annulment to keep his upcomming child legitimate. His wife could be cut out of his estate if anything happened to him. He sends Samir, his half white brother to Michigan to get the papers signed and the lawsuit dropped. Sam is a Bollywood writer and director. He has no loyalties except to his mother, brother and sister-in-law. The brothers feelings about Mili are terrible. They plan on Sam seducing her and dropping her after they get what they want from her. They neither one treat her like a person and ask her to drop the suit she had nothing to do with and sign the annulment papers.
Sam has the go ahead to do a big budget film, but he has not been able to write it. Sam scares Mili because she thinks he is her room mate's brother and she has an accident. While taking care of Mili, he is suddenly able to write but only when she is around. He decides to wait to talk to her about things until the script is written. The story has a funny Bollywood kind of plot along with the examination of women's life in rural India and the search for freedom and protection. Sam feels worse as time goes on and he gets to know Mili and fights his attraction to her as well as his discomfort with his lies.
I know several women who had arranged marriages and older women who were married young. One woman was a PhD, but she still required her husband's permission to bring her children here to educate them in the states. She was married young, sent to her husband's family and learned to be the kind of wife they required. One friend told me she was not opposed to an arranged marriage, because she always knew it was her future. She told me she thought she had a better marriage than some Americans, because when you do not marry for love, respect and mutual desire to build a successful marriage is something you both work harder for. This was a beautifully written story that moves well and presents great characters. It deals with the disappointments of personal relationships and the fact that it is never to late to allow love. I loved this book so much I paid full price.

Much, much more than a romance

I have been on a 'discovering India' journey for the past one and a half years; since coming across an India soap (Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Dom) on youtube, quite by accident. At first, as undoubtedly many westerns, I was fascinated by the rituals, the festivals, the colourful and richly embroidered clothes and the fantastic food. But, as I love languages, I learned many Hindi words and sentences along the way.
But then, I became increasingly aware about other aspects of Indian traditions, from arranged marriages to the more unsavoury customs, such as dowry, childhood marriage (outlawed, but still practiced) and exclusion of widows from society.
More recently, I bought many Indian books, in kindle format, with no more expectation than that of continuing to satisfy my curiosity about India. But then, I came across Sonali Dev and that was a real surprise, way beyond my expectations.
Sonali reaches the ground running on her first book, 'A Bollywood Affair'. The book explores Mili's life, who married at age four, was abandoned by her husband, after his mother moved away from the village, taking her two sons with her. The story is deep and the characters are well developed. One cannot avoid to fall in love with Mili and her brother-in-law, Samir.
While the book is classified as romance, this classification is highly inadequate. It is a book about outdated Indian customs, families, exploitation by an malicious grandfather, resilience, survival and much, much more.
I loved this book and I will read it again, many times. Highly recommend it!
